Questions for the Doctor

I always bring a list of questions when I see my doctor and then I write down the answers for future reference. The following is everything I can think of. I wish I'd had a more complete list when I had seen him the first time. It really does make you feel more secure having answers. Please add anything you feel might be helpful. Here we go!

Questions for the Doctor

Before Surgery Questions:

- What are my alternatives?
- Will I be having a vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy.
- How long will the surgery you perform take?
- Do you recommend a liquid diet day or two before surgery?
- Will my vagina be shortened? If so, by how much?
- What organ or organs will be removed?
- If my ovaries are removed, what should I expect?
- If I keep my ovaries, will the surgery cause loss of ovarian function and early menopause?
- Would it be advisable to donate blood for my surgery?
- Am I getting stitches or staples?
- Will any of my tissues or organs need a biopsy?
- Provided there are no complications, how long should I expect to stay in the hospital?
- Will I be given a PCA to help control pain my first night in the hospital?
- Might the surgery cause a fever?
- What kind of vitamins should I take? Avoid?
- What should I do to prepare my home?
- What can I do to prepare my loved ones?

After Surgery Questions:

- How soon after my surgery should I see you?
- When can I shower?
- If my belly swells, what should I do?
- If my ovaries are left in place, will I have hot flashes?
- What if suspect I have an infection? External? Internal?
- What kind of care will I need after my hysterectomy?
- How long will I feel fatigued?
- What vitamins would help?
- What kind of diet is recommended?
- Are there any special exercises that can help me feel better and recover faster?
- How soon until I can: drive start working, working out, go back to work?
- How long till I can have sex?
- Will I still need to have an exam every year?

Long Term Questions:
- Menopause
- Hormones
- What is progesterone cream?
- Vaginal dryness?

General Questions:
- If I experience depression, what should I do?
