Ovarian Failure with Ovaries retained?

Question to all of you Post-Op Princesses.....

Any of you experienced ovarian failure post op even though you kept your ovaries?. If it was only a temporary failure, how long did it take before they kicked back in again?

I have heard the odds of this are pretty high and this is upsetting to me as I am keeping my ovaries in order to not go through menopause early.

Thanks for your responses.

Unfortunately there are never any guarantees with surgery.

I had my LAVH 3 years ago - I kept both ovaries and they worked fine after surgery. Some ladies have had their ovaries suffer some shock from the trauma of surgery and the ovaries needed time to recover.

Take care - come and visit us in the Post-op forum after surgery to let us know how you are doing.

I think it largely depends on the extent of your surgery and the health of your ovaries.

Ovarian failure is usually attributed to damage to the blood supply to the ovaries.

I've seen various studies, but most seem to agree that women who have a hysterectomy but leave their ovaries go into menopause four or five years sooner than women who still have their uterus. Mind you, that's an average - some women who have immediate ovarian failure are balanced by women who have no hitches at all and go into menopause at their normally prescribed time.

Many women have some hormonal bumps in the road during recovery - I had a few night sweats in the first few weeks, but who knows if that was because of the low grade fever I had, or hormones. But my "period" came right on schedule after surgery, so my surgeon must have done something right.

My sister had her TAH about six years ago. She just turned 41 and her hormones are still going strong.

Like you, I was very worried about my ovaries, as I was only 38 when I had surgery.

Take care.

Ovarian Failure with Ovaries retained?

Hi Sweet Pea,

I am one year post op this Friday and I kept my ovaries...and my ovaries are still working great.

I get mild PMS each month. Tender breasts and some monthly irritability around that time of the month. Just tells me my favorite little "huevos" are still working and that makes me a happy camper!!

Best wishes,

Mary
