When were you diagnosed?

I noticed that most of you have comments about your diagnosis at the bottom of your posts. When were you told? My doctor has not told me that I have anything specific, just that I have abnormal bleeding and pain. Will he find out what exactly is causing all of this after the hysterectomy? I went through the endo biopsy. (That hurt! )No cancer found...Thank you, Lord.

Did your dr just tell you that you needed a hysto?

I was given options of other surgeries, but it seemed as temporary fixes for problems and also it would be several surgeries as opposed to 1 surgery to get everything done and over with.

I'm really surprised that he/she didn't give you a lot of info to better make the decision. I know that my dr didn't tell me everything but he told me overall what was going on.

I met my dr. May 24th in the ER when I was passing clots the size of oranges every 15 minutes. This was after years of a variety of "odd irregularities", cysts, and such.
He ordered ultrasounds and bloodwork there.
About 3 weeks later I had the dreaded biopsy (YES, it did HURT!) and a Pap.
Everything came back normal which lead to my diagnosis of anovulation causing DUB (dysfunctional uterine bleeding). It basically means I don't ovulate each month and that my uterine lining has a tendency to build beyond normal thickness. When it finally decides to let go, I have wicked periods w/ pain down my legs, clots, heavy bleeding and on & on.
My choices were an endometrial ablation (although at my age not likely to be a permanent solution) or a hyst. I've opted for the hyst. because I'm done having children, I'm tired of the unpredictability of the bleeding, the pain, the disruption to my life & my family, among other things!
Call your dr. and ask what the diagnosis is for needing a hyst. They need to have a reason and it sounds like yours is DUB which is the "abnormal bleeding and pain" that you mentioned.

I knew, before my surgery, that I had fibroids and cysts.

It was after my surgery, that it was confirmed that I also had endo and adeno from the pathology report.

I had a laparoscopy done in March to find out what was showing up on ultrsounds. It started out as a diagnostic surgery, but when he found all the endo and adhesions, he took care of it. Usually, there are other tests or diagnostic surgeries done to find out exactly what is causing your symptoms before they actually schedule a hysterectomy.

I have wondered the same thing. My doctor didn't really tell me anything either. I was in pain and describing it and she just said try the D&C and, when I was still in pain afterwards, she said -You don't want to try BC because they won't help the pain and I think I can get the insurance to agree to a hyst. What a strange way to put it. Not - You need one. Not -This is what it will do for you. The exams were not nearly as thorough as I had seen described here either. She didn't press or roll around the uterus edges to feel it. No comments like uterus size or if she could feel anything. It was strange compared to the comments here. The only other test she ordered was an ultrasound. Not even a blood test for anemia - my other doctor ordered all those tests later.

I would like to add something here....
My GP didn't do much other than have some ultrasounds and a CT done to monitor the size of my cysts. He didn't say anything about the fibroids. It wasn't until I saw my GYN that all the other things came into play. In talking to a friend who had her hyst a year before me, she said her (female) GP noticed everything and then referred her to a GYN to schedule surgery.

I was diagnosed with prolapses and after discussing my options, we decided the hyst was the best decision. I had an ultrasound (a couple actually) and the endo biopsy, and nothing else was found. He discovered my uterus was ridden with fibroids when he got in there to take it out.

My female GP listened when I told her about a period that lasted from May 14-July 31. She ordered an ultrasound in August, and even I could see the fibroids the tech marked with every digital "page." Doc referred me to a GYN for the endo biopsy, but I had to wait a month for an appointment on Sept 29. By then, I'd researched and discovered for myself about the endometriosis, the fibroids, the anemia, the swelling, etc. I learned about most of it here. By the time I saw the GYN, I think I knew more about my condition than he did. LOL!!

It was decided in June that I'd be getting a hysterectomy. He was ready to do it right then, but I wasn't emotionally ready.
