Upcoming hysterectomy: What Can I Take for Menstrual Pain

Hello,

I'm about 3 weeks away from surgery. It has been scheduled for a few months and although I have my moments of nervousness, I'm at peace with everything. I can't wait to be on the other side of it with, prayerfully, no more pain and heavy bleeding. I have one more period to go and that makes me really scared. I meet with my gyn on Jan 9th and will ask her what meds I'll be able to take, but, I'm doubting that whatever she recommends/prescribes is NOT going to work for me. I usually take 800mg of Advil throughout the first few days of my periods, which typically does a great job of managing my pain. I've also taken DIM which helps extremely well. I haven't taken that in a couple of months because I don't want to have stuff in my system that could jeopardize my surgery. I keep hearing that magnesium is a good option that helps and is ok to take before surgery. Of course, I'll check with my gyn when I meet with her, but in the meantime, does anyone here know if it's ok to take? Any other advice is will be very much appreciated. Thanks very much.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: What Can I Take for Menstrual Pain

Do you have any idea as to when you might be getting your period? I take ibuprofen for occasional arthritis pain, but was told not to the week before surgery - only for that week. If your gyn says something similar, you might be fine to take Advil up until the 17th.

Advil and Motrin (ibuprofen), Aleve (naproxen) and aspirin all have the same problem: they tend to thin your blood.

I was told I could take acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) for my arthritis. Unfortunately, acetaminophen doesn't *do* anything for my arthritis! Fortunately, I didn't have any flare-ups, so I was okay.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: What Can I Take for Menstrual Pain

Hi all,

Thanks very much for the great info and replies.

I believe it will start on 14 Jan. So yes, it would be awesome if I could take Aleve on the 13th and 14th. The pain is just unbearable the first few days. I'm hoping my doctor will allow it. I'll have to take blood thinners for a few weeks after the surgery to prevent blood clots - so I'm hoping that cause for the extra precaution from taking the Aleve before the surgery. Tylenol does absolutely nothing for my cramps.

I found this on the internet to describe DIM and some of it's benefits. It has done WONDERS for me and it's a natural solution. I had way less pain, zero bloating, and zero feeling of heaviness in my stomach around period time. It allowed me to lessen the amount of Aleve during that time of the month. I absolutely love the stuff. It's supposed to be all natural, but I never had a chance to speak with my doctor about taking it so close to surgery, so I stopped taking it a couple of months ago (after the surgery was scheduled) just to be on the safe side.

(DIM supplement (Diindolylmethane) is a phytonutrient found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, etc. It's an anti-cancer and anti-aging nutrient. It also helps relieve PMS symptoms, regulate the menstrual cycle by lowering bad excess estrogen. It can help lower excess estrogen, helping the body to eliminate it and reestablish hormonal balance in conditions like anovulatory cycles, recurrent miscarriages, heavy bleeding due to fibroids, endometriosis, fibrocystic breast, menstrual pain and ovarian cysts.)
