yeast infection
Is it common to get a yeast infection after a hysterectomy? I am 10 days post op and feel like I have one.

yeast infection
Hi Deb
They do seem to come up a lot, but I think most of the time it is because of antibiotics that are given. I know I will get one almost anytime I take an antibiotic.
They can be miserable when you are already tender from surgery. You should call your dr and ask for something. The "nothing in the vagina" rule would keep you from using the over the counter stuff.
Your dr also might want to check to see what is going on.
I hope you can find relief soon. Let us know if you find out for sure.
's, Rita

Hi I think the answer to that is yes. I got one about 6 weeks after the operation having not had one for years. When I spoke with the specialist he said it was common due to the antibiotics they give you directly following surgery. I haven't had another one since and I am about 10 weeks post op. So good luck with your recovery.
Bye Amanda

Yes, the antibiotics can cause an overgrowth of yeast. However, your symptoms if restricted to itching and burning could also be a result of healing.
I was surprised when my nurse came in with a tube of antibiotic vaginal cream and told me I was supposed to insert an applicatorful every night and clean it out with a vinegar/water douche the next morning. I was scared to death at that prospect - I was one day postop TVH and A&P repair so I'm FULL of stitches in there...but it is surprisingly painless (I'm REALLY careful) and my doc explained it the next day...it's his way of keeping it all clear, says it's impossible to sterilize the vagina so with all those stitches it helps prevent infection until they heal. Makes sense to me. And so far, so good. I have a little pelvic pain and a lot of gas pain but no vaginal issues at all (knock on wood). I have a doc from the "old school" though. I would definitely simply call them and ask.
