surgery may be changing

I went to see my dr yesterday and she said there may be another alternative rather than hysterectomy. The reason she sd I needed a hysterectomy is because I have a fast growing fibroid that has grew from nothing to about 4 cm in 4 months and she said that was alarming. She told me yesterday they can just remove the tumor and send it over to be biopsed. The recovery time for this surgery would drop to about 5 days. I am relieved but scared because im thinking the worst about this fast growing fibroid. She told me if it can back and they found something wrong the hysterectomy would be no choice, but reading the internet about fast growing fibroids and what they can mean I am scared beyond belief. I have PCOS and irregular periods and this surgery wont treat that so i know I am risking to continue having irregular bleeding if i dont have the hyster, I have to call her on monday to tell her which surgery I want to have done next friday.dont know what to do.

Re: surgery may be changing

If you are not 100% sure you want the hyst then don't do it. It can never be reversed. You can have it later if you must have one. My doctor gave me no choice, told me I HAD to have a hyst, and I found out later that he had lied in my records to justify doing the surgery and the pathology report proves that I did not need it. I was uncertain going in but thought "he's the doctor, he knows more about this than I do" so I did it. Worse decision of my life. If you are uncertain at all, take the time to get a second opinion or even a third until you can make your decision knowing for sure you are doing the right thing.

Re: surgery may be changing

Its a difficult decision that you have set before you and the weekend doesn't give you much time to research or pother things. Can you ask for more time to make this decision? Does your intuition lead you one way or another? I wish you peace with whatever decision you come to. Good luck~*

Miracletobehold

First, deep breath. I know it is easy to say and hard to do, but don't get ahead of you diagnosis. Just because it is fast growing does not mean anything - benign masses can also grow fast. I know because my complex ovarian cyst was fast growing (went from nothing to very-large grapefruit sized in about 6 months with multiple uterine fibroids to boot!), and my gyn onc surgeon tested everything in the OR and all was benign.

I know your mind is racing right now trying to decide what to do, and I am sorry you are dealing with this.

The other sister is right... you cannot undo a hysterectomy. Can they maybe perform the pathology in the OR, and then if they need to, perform the hysterectomy then? Also, if your doctor thinks there is a strong chance that you will get another large fibroid would she recommend that you get a hysterectomy now?

You can also go for a second opinion, if your health situation allows.

Make the decision that is right for you. We will support whatever you decide.
