Chipped teeth from intubation?

Hi! For those of you ladies who had general anesthesia, did any of you accidentally have your teeth chipped by the breathing tube?

This was my 5th general anesthesia surgery, and the 3rd time my teeth have been chipped (all different hospitals and anesthesiologists). It's only very slight on two teeth on the front left side of my mouth. I am probably the only one who noticed because the teeth are a bit rough now. Maybe I just have a small mouth?

Chipped teeth from intubation?

Hi knittymcknitter,

I'm sorry you had this happen! I have heard of other Sisters having this problem. I remember that before I underwent general anesthesia, I had to sign a paper saying I was aware this could happen.

I can understand how this would be distressing. If you have any doubts about whether or not this will cause a problem, I would encourage you to check with your dentist. He or she would be able to let you know if your teeth are okay the way the are or if you need some minor repairs.

In the meantime, perhaps some other Sisters could share?

Chipped teeth from intubation?

Hi there,
While none of my teeth were chipped, my nurse who did anesthesia made it very clear that it was a risk. In fact, she said that it was the most common risk of general anesthesia that she was familiar with.

Feel well!

Chipped teeth from intubation?

Yes....I have been under general anesthesia 5 times in the past 18 months. The next to last one I had a new nurse anesthesist and I didn't notice anything until I was eating my jello. My front left tooth felt like the jello was stuck to it but when I ran my tongue over it, i realized it was chipped. It feels smoother now since its been almost a month now. I was never told it was a possibility...I guess I'll have to go to my dentist and get it smoothed again. Sorry it happened to you!
