More information on catheter
I've already posted how anxious I am about my 10/5 Da Vinci surgery. I read the post-op posts daily. It seems that everyone has a catheter until the evening of the first day or early morning of the day after surgery. Is there anyone who had her catheter removed before she regained awareness?

Re: More information on catheter
Not for my hysto, but I had another lap procedure in May of this year and had the foley removed before I woke up. Check with your doctor to see what they prefer, but I had to keep my cath in after my hysto until the next morning in order to make sure everything was functioning again.
HTH!

Re: More information on catheter
Good Morning, I am also extremely concerned about the catheter which is crazy as I am not nervous about anything else except this cathether.
After my last surgery (ovarian cyst) I had problems so I keep asking my doctor about it which I am sure she is getting tired of me asking, however both her and the nurses are being very reaasurring. But it would be nice to hear good stories!
Am also having davinci on Oct 21

I'll post what happens with me. I think I'm focusing on the catheter to distract myself from everything else.

Re: More information on catheter
Dont let the catheter scare you, I was terrified but it really wasnt bad at all. I had to keep mine in till the evening of the 2nd day I was in the hospital and usually they take it out that morning but I had some problems come up to where I wasnt allowed out of the bed till that afternoon. I thought it was going to bother me or hurt me but it really wasnt bad. In fact I kinda forgot it was there because there was so much else going on. It really doesnt hurt when they remove it either, its very fast and its over with before you know it. You prob. will have it in till the following day, they really dont want you having to get up to use the bathroom till then. I hope this helps ease your mind. Good luck to you

Re: More information on catheter
I had a lap in August and they removed the cath before I woke up. Kinda wish they hadn't though, as I had to be cathed a few hours later bc I hadn't peed. Once they realized I hadnt peed bc I was dehydrated, they took the cath out, had me drink, and all was well. I've been cathed 6 times in my life; it's not just a bowl of cherries, but it really isn't bad at all.

Re: More information on catheter
My surgery was Aug 24th, and I had a catheter in until 5:30 the next morning. I was bored lying in bed, and i wanted to get up and start walking. The catheter wasen't that bad, but I felt better after it was removed. More imporantly, it felt so good to get up and walk around.

Hi. Don'r worry about the catheter - it's not bad, REALLY. I wasn't thrilled about the INSERTION of the catheter, which thankfully was done while I was out. I was a little nervous about having it removed, but it was quick and easy. To me the worst part was trying to pee after I had it removed! They give you several hours to do it, but I was getting a little nervous when the clock was ticking away and I still hadn't gone on my own. It finally happened with about an hour to spare, so I was happy. It took quite a bit of concentration, but I got it done! You'll be fine!

Re: More information on catheter
I'll agree, having it removed wasn't bad at all. I had it inserted while I was under, so don't remember that, either. I know every one is different, but for me, it didn't hurt having it in; I could feel it was there, and at times depending on my position it felt like I had to urinate. I was able to get up and go for a walk while it was still in with no problems at all. To be honest, it was really nice being able to drink as much as I wanted that first night post-op (I was verrrrrry thirsty!) and not have to get up to pee all the time!!
Also, every place is different, but I wasn't given a specific time frame in which I had to urinate after having it removed. However, they did measure my output, so be aware that you might have to pee into a 'hat' that sits in the toilet afterward so they can make sure you are producing and eliminating at acceptable levels!
