Autologous Blood donation
I am planning on donating blood to be used in case I need any after or during surgery. I am not willing to take the hep C risk if I need a unit of blood.
I know that needing blood is unlikely, but I am interested to hear if anyone needs a transfusion. If so, what was the issue?
Thanks

Re: Autologous Blood donation
I ended up with internal bleeding a couple days after surgery--the morning I was suppose to be released actually! In my case, we "guess" that when I dry heaved the day after surgery, the only time I ever remember any surgical pain, I either broke loose a blood clot or burst something! I was very symptomatic from the anemia (racing pulse, erratic blood pressure, blacking out, hemoglobin at 7/7.5) and when I blacked out one time too many, my doctor ordered the transfusion--two pints of donated blood. (My surgery was on a Tuesday, we discovered the internal bleeding on Thursday, and I had the transfusion on Sunday.)
I had wanted to donate my own blood but I only had time to donate one pint. My doctor does not do transfusions unless at least two pints are needed. So, I asked if my SIL could donate for me. The hospital where I had my surgery considered her blood to be stranger donated as she was not a first degree relative--parent or sibling--or even blood related. Thus, they would have put her blood through all the regular testing and we didn't have time. So, a no go on that option!
Talk over your concerns with your doctor and see what can be arranged. Each physician and medical facility will have their own protocol to follow. You can also call the hospital where you plan to have surgery and ask for information.
I was concerned about having a blood transfusion but it was what I needed so I bit the bullet and thanked God someone had been caring enough to donated their life's blood so that it was available when I needed it! I have no negative issues from having the transfusion all those years ago!

Re: Autologous Blood donation
If you check out the website for the American Red Cross you will find great information. I am not sure where you are from. The website has very specific information on all the testing and safety of receiving a blood transfusion. I wish you the best and hope this helps a little. ~HUGS~
