What sort of exams or tests do they do? And I guess the Dr. tells you what to do the day before surgery, right?

What happens at your pre-op appt?
Hi hon. Yeah, usually they do labwork (blood and urine), you may meet with the anesthesiologist and discuss stuff like if/how you will be sedated and post-op pain control, etc. If you have had surgery before and had problems with nausea, now is the time to let them know - they can give you medicine to help keep you from getting sick. Take a list of questions if you have them, and be sure to write down the answers, cuz sometimes it's kinda a blur. Good luck.... let us know how it goes!

What happens at your pre-op appt?
Some ladies have a pre op apt with their DR as well as the hosp. Some don't. The day I scheduled my surgery was about 6 weeks before my surgery, and that was the last time I saw my DR before surgery. She called me the night before to see how I was doing and to answer any last minute questions I might have.
My hosp pre op was the week before surgery. I filled out forms in admissions, had vitals checked, an extensive medical history interview, blood drawn in the lab, and was given all the prep instructions (in writing). They also told me exactly where to go the morning of surgery, and when. Some ladies have to have a chest x-ray, I didn't. I also didn't meet with the anesthesiologist. They don't know til the morning of surgery who the actual one is, so I didn't meet him til that morning.

pre-op
At my pre-op I met the Anesthesiologist and she took an extensive medical background. To what surgeries I have had and what problems if any I had. Also what medications I have taken and are currently taken, she wanted to know the dosage strength as well so make sure you write it down. Also when you stopped taking certain medication. My surgery had to be reschedualed due to medications I had taken up to two weeks prior. Make sure to ask questions. I feelt real upset at the time, but when I had time to think about it she was only looking out after me. My other doctor said that the medications wouldn't affect my surgery, but come to find out from the anesthesiologist, it could cause my asthma to flair when they put the breathing tub in! I could stop breathing and die on the table...scarry thought! So if you are not schedualed to talk to the Anesthesiologist, tell them you want to talk to them anyway...they know their job and they are the ones that have to keep you breathing during your surgery! My surgery is reschedualed for the 19th, and I haven't taken anything my Anesthesiologist told me not to take.
Be prepaired to ask the tough questions.

What happens at your pre-op appt?
Hi Peaches.....
Mine was this past Wednesday, and they took a urine sample, blood drawn for the lab, a chest x-ray, and because I infrequently have an irregular heartbeat, an EKG. A nurse sat down and went over my paperwork, and told me step-by-step what would be happening for my surgery (which is tomorrow) and exactly where my husband and sister are to park and wait for me.....She was very helpful and answered most of my questions. Didn't meet the anesthesiologist though.
In addition, they put one of those plastic bracelets on me with some file number and told me not to take it off before Monday (I don't know if this applies to my blood work-up or preregistration, but I still have it on as I don't want to delay my trip back to the OR at all!)

my preop
I had my preop on Wed. I had blood drawn, blood/pressure,pulse,respirations, was given information on pain control after surgery, information about my stay, and filled out admission paperwork. Thats about it. I did not meet the anaesthetist, and I haven't seen my doctor since we decided to go ahead with surgery last month. I think every hopsital/doctor is different and it depends on anyother illness etc you have-I have a clean bill of health otherwise so mine was very straight forward. All the best to you!

Pre Op
I just had my pre op this past Thurs (Nov. 7). I went in expecting to sign the consent form and give a couple tubes of blood. I ended up with a Chest X ray, EKG, many vials of blood and a visit with the anesthiologist(sp). Plus met with one of the residents who will be assisting, then back to the nurse who gave me a whole list of stuff for before and after surgery.
I didn't know it would be so involved, but as one of the nurses said, "Honey, you're having MAJOR surgery."
Hope all goes well!
