Mirena IUD vs Hysterectomy
I'm 52 years old and am still having regular periods. They're extremely grave for 3-4 days but last for 7. Heavy days require a super-plus tampon and a pad and on those days I'm EXTREMELY tired. To the point I almost can't function. No pain other than being a pain in the neck.
I saw a GYN today to discuss my options. She scheduled an ultrasound and biopsy to make sure nothing else is going on. My last pap was last month and everything looked good. If everything goes well after the two scheduled procedures, then I decide what to do based on all of my options.
I've narrowed it down to the Mirena IUD or a hysterectomy, keeping my ovaries. I'm leaning toward the Mirena since it would carry me through menopause. It's cheaper and doesn't have the recovery time that a hysterectomy has. But everyone who's had a hysterectomy says it's the best thing they've ever done!
Would love to hear from anyone who's had to make this same decision. Especially at the age of 50+ but all input will be appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: Mirena IUD vs Hysterectomy
I had my hysterectomy at 49. My uterus was enlarged with many fibroids. I had heavy bleeding with anemia. I was given options and the choice for hysterectomy was my decision. The options I was given were to help with the bleeding but would not get rid of the fibroids. I wanted a permanent solution. Along with many fibroids my pathology showed adenomyosis. My surgery and recovery were uneventful. I have no regrets. Continue to review your options and make a decision that you feel is right. Good luck on your journey

Re: Mirena IUD vs Hysterectomy
I used a mirena for ten years and it was a godsend. No heavy periods and no pain. However, my Gyn wanted me off at 52 so that I could go thru menopause. What a mistake that was. As soon as it came out cysts started and grew into a tumor. This resulted in a hyster. ( Mirena can help stop cysts)
Some people can't tolerate it but I was fine. You definitely need to gave your Gyn do it. Make sure they are experienced in order to do it. My daughter had someissues but it was normal for about 6 months. Some take it out too early without waiting for everything to settle down.
Good luck on your decision.

Re: Mirena IUD vs Hysterectomy
I was also given Mirena as an option for the heavy bleeding, but it would not have treated my fibroids, and all the issues that go along with that. I am 46 and peri-menepausal. My mom was totally done at 48, so I hestited and tried other procedures (i.e. ablation) trying to avoid a hysterectomy.
Now, if you don't have fibroids, I would do some research on Mirena. My research found a mix of love/hate for the thing. Ultimately you have to follow your gut. If insurance will cover Merina (very expensive) you may want to give it a shot before under going surgery.
I passed because of my fibroids (bulk and bladder issues).
Good luck on what ever you decide!

Re: Mirena IUD vs Hysterectomy
I have had the mirena for 2 years I still get cramps and I still have very low iron levels,it took several months before my periods finally stopped. But over the last 6 or seven months I have noticed a problem with hair loss that has be attributed to the hormones in the iud. To stop the hair loss the iud would have to be removed. They heavy bleeding will return. As well as I have pre cancerous cell on my cervix so a hysterectomy is the right decision for me I am 37 so no where near menopause.

Re: Mirena IUD vs Hysterectomy
I have had the mirena back in my 30s and gave it a go again this past fall. Never ever would i wish what i was going through on anyone . I literally felt like i was going crazy . I had some minor depression issues back the first time but i also had a LOT going on at the time so i attributed it all to that. However ...this time there is no way it could have been anything BUT that. And as soon as I had it removed ... I could tell a difference. After a few weeks my bleeding came back and after a couple of months of heavy bleeding still. .. i opted to do the hysteroscopy /d&c and ablation. I am 2 days post . So far not even any spotting but realize that could change . I would say if you are at all hormone sensitive ....carefully research the Mirena . .
