Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

So far they haven't ordered it and my surgery is next Monday. I'm a bit nervous about everything and getting everything in order before I have my surgery.

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

I had blood work done; EKG and chest xray done about 3 days before my surgery...I am glad they did it to make sure I was in good shape for the surgery. Good Luck...you will do great!

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

You should verify with your doctor or hospital....i think this is pretty standard procedure.

Have you preregistered at the hospital yet? I just did mine Friday and then I walked to the lab and gave blood and urine.

My big day is Friday, so I am trying to get it all done too!
Best wishes

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

Sure it's normal to have it done, matter of fact you have to have it done before so they can make sure you are well enough to have the surgery. Sometimes your dr. will do it in their office or when you go to register and fill out paperwork at the hospital if you haven't had it done yet they will send you to the lab.

I just had a TAH 10 days ago.

Trust me, they do this all the time and they have a process.

Good luck with your surgery.

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

My bloodwork was done the day of my pre-op and that was the week before my surgery. I'd give the dr's office a call and check.

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

I see my general doctor on Friday, and I'm waiting for a call back from the nurse at my doctor's office...they might have taken the bloodwork I had done recently from my general doctor...not sure. I'll definitely ask. Thank you!

PS I did pre-register on the phone with the hospital, the reason it was over the phone was bc the hospital is 2 hours away and I cannot get down there. I asked about blood work and they said it wasn't necessary but to discuss it with my general doctor. What ticks me off is I was supposed to see my regular doctor last Friday but we had a cancellation.

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

I pre-registered with my hospital over the phone also and it's only 2-3 miles from my house. It was easy and I was glad not to have to go there.
Not sure but I don't think Friday would be enough time for the labs to be run and results to get back prior to surgery. Hopefully you'll hear back from your dr., but I wouldn't sweat it. I'm sure it'll be fine. I also had blood drawn when I was in the pre-op area but I believe that was to hold in case they needed to type me for a transfusion. Didn't need one - whew!!

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

My TLH/BSO is scheduled for Friday, and I had my pre-op bloodwork done today. From what I've read on the boards, it is standard procedure to have it done. I agree with the other sisters, give your DR a call and double-check - wouldn't want to have to reschedule surgery because of a communication snafu.

Best of luck to you, and here's to a speedy recovery.

For my fellow sisters scheduled for this Friday...Let's go get 'em girls and get our Princess Crowns!!

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

I had two rounds of pre-op bloodwork. The first was a day or two after my initial consultation. I couldn't take the first surgery date I was scheduled for (about two weeks after that first appointment) and so rescheduled for two weeks later. The doctor requested another blood test after my pre-op a week before surgery because the previous test by then was a month old and he wanted something more current.

Re: Is it normal to have pre-op bloodwork done??

I'll see if my general doctor can call the office. It's just funny how they didn't mention it and how the nurse on the phone said it wasn't really necessary unless my general doctor thought it was necessary, but because he cannot see me til Friday I'm going to try to get this expedited and run to the lab after work today if it is necessary.

My mom told me another reason they might not need my blood is because my blood type is O+ which is common but I honestly don't know what that has to do with pre-op bloodwork??
