Ladies get your vision checked

I decided this morning that I really do need new glasses. I currently wear progressives. I was thinking maybe I should wait until I am further away from my surgery (12/16) but then again, I could go now while I'm on sick leave. Then I saw you post and thought, I need to take care of this. Thanks for your post and reminder.

Hormone levels can play a definite factor in your vision. Also aging--most people require bifocals sometime after the age of 40, some earlier. Medications and diseases can also affect your vision.
I had noticed a definite change before I had my surgery, but waited to update my prescription until just before I went back to work, to make sure the meds and hormones were leveled out.

I am only 42 (not close to "aging" or menopause) I kept my ovaries and have no hormonal problems.
I did get my eyes checked about 4 monthe prior to surgery and now have noticed my eyes getting worse. I don't know if it is because I've been spending more time on the computer at work or age or what but how would a TVH affect the eyes???

I had required bifocals around the age of 40. I'm 50 now. Even though you don't feel close to aging, your lenses in your eyes lose elasticity, and therefore do not adjust as quickly or as far as they used to. This usually happens between the ages or 40 and 50. If you previously were a minus (nearsighted), you may notice your vision improving (less minus), or you have to take off your glasses to read. If you were a plus (farsighted), your vision may get worse, and you need a stronger rx. Reading or computer glasses may be required, even if your distance vision is still good. Surgery, the meds used, including pain killers, anesthesia, can affect the amount of pressure in your eyes, causing a temporary (sometimes permanent) change in vision. Computers and poor lighting play a minor role. Some people require bifocals before the age of 40 (my daughter's sister-in-law wore them at 19). Some don't require them until they are 50 or 60 or even older. The average age is 45. Your vision changes may occur gradually, but you don't notice until one day you realize you just don't see as well as you used to, or think you ought to be able to. Or they may occur suddenly--one day you can see just fine and the next you can't.
In any case, whether you notice vision changes or not, you still need to have your vision checked at least every two years, for your own health. As I stated before, a good eye doctor can detect other health problems besides vision changes.

Ladies get your vision checked

Thanks for the info- I know I''m not getting any younger, I'm just suprised at the rate of change in my eyesight recently. i can't see how it would be related to surgery, I think it's just coincedence.
I have a good health plan and check my eyes every year. Unfortunately, where I live there aren't any decent ophthamologists, but we do the best we can.
Take care

When I was 35 I decided to ask my eye doc about lasik surgery. This was before my tah/bso. He said I would probably only get about 5 years out of it as once I turned 40 my eyesight would probably start shifting to farsightedness. Sure enough, I hit 40 and I noticed a change in my eye sight. I finally relented and got the bi focals. It can be a part of the aging process.

Re: Ladies get your vision checked

Yes ladies, hormones can play havoc with your vision, much like that of a pregnant woman, it is not unusual for a pregnant woman to come in after her 6 weeks check up and have a significant change in her prescription, I am only waiting for my levels to get leveled out and will have my boss give me a full and complete check up. I would recommend everyone have a yearly exam if you are a diabetic, and for others if not yearly every other year. Many people have found out after a good exam they now have become diabetic, or blood pressure is out of control. The eyes are very important ladies, keep them healthy.

Re: Ladies get your vision checked

I am still pre OP, but I think often we are so busy taking care of everyone else that when we do have to slow down, we take notice of things such as changes in our eye sight. Many have probably noticed after surgery for that reason. I was recently told by an eye specialist, eyes really are windows to your soul, a lot can be seen in them. No matter what the reasoning a checkup won't hurt. I will add it to my to do list for getting ready to the hospital.

Re: Ladies get your vision checked

What a great post - I thought it was the insomnia causing me to have tired eyes!!

My eyes were checked 2 months prior to the Op and a good clean bill of health.

I wear glasses for driving at night only as I have rugby ball shaped eye balls not football (soccer) shaped eye balls - it stops headlights dazzling me and I work regular nights as a driver.

Other than that I've got OR had 20/20 vision.

BUT since the op I can't read ingredients on labels, instructions on bottles or small print, without holding it so far away from me that I feel like Inspector Gadget with long arms, lol.

I kept my ovaries but they have gone to sleep on me. Is it worth seeing the optician so soon or to wait it out and see what happens.

This is so frustrating as its definitely worrisome to have changed so bad so quickly.

I also noticed that I've had to increase my text font size up by 2 levels on my iPhone and the email type face too.

Aaaarrrrhhhhh. :-0
