second guessing myself
I am new here and have loved reading the posts. I am 39 and scheduled for a total lap hyst save one ovary. I have stage 4 endometriosis and fibroids. After talking to people I know who have had the sugery(all with no complications), I decided to move ahead with the sx 1/25. The more I read, the more apprehensive I am becoming. My symptoms are slowly getting worse since my 1st lap 2 years ago, and I feel the longer I wait, the worse the symptoms, the harder the surgery.
I seem to dwell on the negative things(as that is mainly all I found on the web until here), and would love to hear something positive to help me feel confident in my decision again

Re: second guessing myself
smh88,
The apprehension you are feeling is perfectly normal, and granted, some of the posts you read may help fuel your fears, but everyone's experience is different.
This Friday, the 8th, will be the second 'anniversary' of my TLH/BSO. It was not as bad as I had feared, and looking back, the waiting was the worst part. My surgery took place around 2 p.m., and I was walking up and down the hall around midnight, and was home before noon.
Please take care and know that your feelings are normal. I think you will be surprised, and pleased, at how much better you feel after the surgery.

Re: second guessing myself
Thanks for the encouragement Charlotte. I really needed to hear that!
I told my husband, maybe I am jumping the gun, I should wait.
His reply..."oh until your crawling on the floor again because it's hurts you too bad when you stand up, great idea!!"
Deep down I know it's going to be fine, be the doubts just keep coming back
Thanks again!

Re: second guessing myself
You are most welcome, smh88. Yes, it will be fine. I remember wondering if the doctor actually performed the surgery because I felt so well!
The doubts will most likely come and go, and again, that's normal. I felt confident one minute and terrified the next. It's definitely an emotional roller coaster!

Re: second guessing myself
smh88 I know how you feel. I am scheduled for this tuesday (the 5th) and am getting very nervous. What I can tell you is that I had scheduled this surgery two years ago and canceled a couple weeks ahead of time because I started second guessing my decision. It was only a month or two later that I realized what a mistake I had made. I waited another eight months or so to schedule it again, but this time I had changed my insurance company and had to wait an additional year because it was pre-existing. I guess my point is that there is a reason you have considered having the surgery. My fear kept me from having it the first time and even though I am very nervous, I know I need to stick to my decision. That being said, it is important to be confident in your decision. I wish you the best and hope you can come to a comfortable place with all of this!

Re: second guessing myself
smh88 and jenflan34231,
I had the same feelings. The more I read, the more scared to death I got. I finally talked to my doctor about it and she put my feelings about all of the post off complications to rest for me. Yes, they do happen, but she felt it was a small percentage. I am sure if we get those complications we will feel differently though. I kept second guessing myself constantly but decided to listen to my doctor in the end. I am glad that I did.
LAVH, everything removed.

Re: second guessing myself
Hi there - I almost cancelled my hysterectomy because I was second guessing the timing as well as many other things (work, hormones, menopause....) BUT I just want you to know that I did go through with my complete abdominal hysterectomy on December 7th and I have done remarkably well; I'm still in the healing stages but I enjoyed the holidays and felt much better than I could have ever imagined. If I can give you any advice it's this: The first week was rough but one of the main things I realized is that once I stopped taking the Tylenol with Codene I actually felt a million times better (no nausea or constitpation...) and the pain really can be controlled with just regular ibuprophen and extra strength tylenol with no codene. You are the only one that can make this decision for yourself but I'm only 40 and I'm healing very well...you can do this too if you choose and your positive attitude will make all the difference.
Take care and I wish you all the best no matter what you decide.
Karen

Re: second guessing myself
I second guessed myself all the way into the operating room! I was so nervous about having the surgery and whether or not I should put it off.
I can tell you in hindsight that I am so very glad I had it done. The quality of life that was restored to me is unbelievable. I feel so much better and am not sick for a week every month.
It is normal I think to second guess yourself. And if you need to, there is nothing wrong with canceling and giving yourself more time to think about it. Just know that nerves are almost always part of the package with this surgery!
Good luck!
Cindy
