Damage to uteter

Had my total abdominal hysterectomy on 21st dec. was discharged on 24th. Not feeling great but expected that. About 9 days later went to a and e with left flank pain. It was discovered there had been an injury to my ureter during hystetectomy they tried to stent it but opp failed and I had another operation to place a nephrostomy tube in my kidney. This drains into a bag. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the consultant that did the hystetectomy and next Monday a nephrostogram to see if damage had repaired. If it hasn't o have to have a uteter re implantation in April.
I am absolutely terrified. Has anyone else had this problem. ? Did you heal yourself or did you have a re implantation and if so was it sucessful and was it painful. X

Re: Damage to uteter

Salsa, I KNOW your pain!!! Been there and done that! just ask me anything. I had Da vinchi robot surgery 9/21/11 and severed my LEFT ureter. Had the Nephrostomy bag, catheter...whole nine yards. YOU
WILL BE FINE also. At the time you feel like you are the only person in the whole world going through this, but your not. I met some nice ladies on here who helped me through this. I am here for you. Mine did not heal on it's own...sorry. Maybe yours will. I had to have another open surgery to repair the ureter 6 weeks after my hysterectomy. It is called a Ureteral re-implantation with a Psoas hitch...basicly moving the bladder over and attaching it to the hip muscle and then reimplanting the ureter into the bladder. I hope yours heals on its own. let me know if you need anything. Take care...big hugs to you. Hang in there! I know that bag is such a bother!!.

Re: Damage to uteter

I had the same thing happen to me during my hysterectomy. The surgeon noticed her mistake right away and called in the Urologist to put in a stent. The stent didnt hold up, so after "leaking" out of my vagina for a week, the urologist did the bladder implant surgery. I go in a few weeks to have the stents taken out, but its been such a nightmare. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel though. It was a horrible thing to happen, but these mistakes are sometimes made. I thank god that i'm feeling better and that it could be fixed. Things happen for a reason. I'm thankful for support from loved ones and just know that you will feel better. *HUGS! And i'm so sorry this happened to all of you.

Re: Damage to uteter

Hey Salsa,
I suffered the same injury 3 weeks ago to my right ureter, have the stent in place, which is working right now, but all will tell 4/22 with the next cysto. I hope U have had your recovery goes well & U can get on with your life, but I know your pain, frustration, anxiety that U are feeling. I was also there, 2 days after that first cysto, I was a bitter & angry person, but I told myself I have to move on because that negativity I had was bringing me down. I will say some prayers for U, but it is difficult to have trust again in health care providers. I know I am one myself & this whole experience has been eye-opener for me.
My prayers are with U,
RumidineMc
