Post Operative Nausea & Vomitting
Does anyone have any tips on PONV? I am proned to PONV (Post Operative Nausea & Vomitting). I had my post-op and talked with a anestesiologist and I wasn't convinced she heard me when I said that I needed something for my nausea & vommiting BEFORE, DURING and after surgery. She kept saying after and I kept saying, "No, BEFORE & DURING, too!!!" My friend just had gall bladder surgery and had severe PONV because the surgerical staff forgot the BEFORE & DURING anti-nausea medication. My friend was in misery from the nausea & vomitting as well as from the pain of her surgery. I don't want this to happen to me. Any suggestions?
My surgery is 2/17/03.

Had a TAH/BSO on Tuesday, 1/28, and like you I am prone to PONV. Spoke to anesthesiologist prior to surgery and made sure that he understood this (the one you spoke to at pre-op may not be the one that administers the anesthesia). Whatever they gave me worked! Felt a little quesy a couple of time right out of recovery but all turned out to be an air bubble! Just be persistent and make sure that you also tell one on the pre-op nurses (and OR Nurses if you get a chance) and tell your surgeon too! Remember sometimes its pays to be a pest!

Haven't tried it yet, but my primary care MD suggested to ask the anesthesiologist for "Zofran". In these days of managed care - don't know if they will put up obstacles (or just give it to you) - but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Think I got zofran...had no problems...
I have a condition called "periodic limb movements of sleep" (PLMS). Reglan, which is often used for PONV is something that exacerbates this, so they put that on my red wristband to not give it to me. When I had mentioned it to my ob-gyn before he said they probably could give me zofran then. I had absolutely no n&v--in fact, I had my operation at 1:30 on a Wednesday and was eating at 7:00am the next morning.
BTW - this was with a double-dose of anesthesia. It seems because of my PLMS, I kept having thigh contractions (usually the contractions happen when I relax) when they gave me muscle relaxants. Took me about 2-2 1/2 hours to wake up from the anesthesia...and I was pretty groggy the rest of the evening.

Post Operative Nausea & Vomitting
Hi! Had my SAH/BSO on Thursday (1/30) and I know the anethesiologist gave me Zofran during the surgery because I heard him name it as he was reading the vials the nurse handed him before I drifted off. Woke up without nausea, although I might have been distracted by the pain before the morphine took effect. When I did feel a little nauseus, I was given Maalox (liquid) and compazine (pills). Both seemed to work to settle my stomach. By the way, I'm not usually nauseus as a result of anxiety, but before this surgery, I had dry heaves, probably from a combination of nerves, headache (no caffeine?) and no food for entirely too long. However, got it all under control and now feel really good (especially, compared to how I felt three days ago).
Hope my experience was helpful. Best wishes to you for an easy surgery and quick recovery.
Janis.

Hi Lonny,
Boy I sure hope you don't get that woman for your anesthesiologist. It's a shame she doesn't want to listen to you. I would keep mentioning it. I've seen the stories on this site about how some women woke up sick. I don't agree with giving you the anti-nausea stuff after. My really nice "A" man gave me zofran just before they took me to the O.R. I had a really bad time of from general anesthesia. Because of that I also asked if I could have an epidural. The anesthesiologist told me he would give me a spinal and I could have an epidural put in at the same time as the spinal (one stick only) for post op pain. You can read my story at the www house link below.
I wasn't sure if I could tolerate a PCA morophine pump. (nausea, fogginess, etc) I didn't want to have an increased risk with a belly full of stitches. I wasn't concerned about morphine in an epidural/spinal because it doesn't have the same circulation--effects are limited to nerve-endings in lower portion of body and drug does not cross brain/blood barrier.
Here's a link about post op pain management
epidural or pca pump

Here is a link about nausea and the drug zofran (zofran is an expensive drug but you will see in this link that it didn't pay for the lady to get something else rather than zofran) I had compazine after my general and it didn't help at all and I had a bad allergic reaction to it.

Post Operative Nausea & Vomitting
Another way to treat post-op nausea and sickness is by use of the NG (naso-gastric) tube. Granted, this is rarely used during a hyst (although I was a lucky one...), but during the initial post op period, as long as the suction is kept up, it can *really* help.
But I'm sure you won't need, or have, the NG tube. And I'm *positive* that meds would do the job a whole lot better! But, it's sometimes used, anyway.
Good luck, whatever happens. You're not alone, and I'm sure you're going to do fabulously.
