I think I'm in denial....

OR I'm very lucky. Random thoughts here.

I have had 2 surgeries in my life; tonselectomy at 9 and and ACL reconstruction at 35. I think I might be oblivious to what I am facing in 6 weeks.

I will be home alone for most of the day until my boyfriend gets out of work. During the day, I have lined up his sister to check in on me. I am hoping that my sister will step up to the plate as well, but she isn't reliable with that. My Dad so wants to be there, but his health is not good either.

I guess I just don't know WHAT to expect, and I'm hoping it will turn out OK.

Thanks for listening.

And BTW, I love Snoopy! My first poster as a teen was Snoopy with the saying "I am the sunshine of my life". I guess that's how I've always lived my life.

Re: I think I'm in denial....

I'm not sure what type of surgery you're having, but I had dVH this past Tuesday, came home Wednesday morning, and I would have been fine at home alone this week. My doctor asked that I have someone with me for 2 or 3 days. I feel like I've had an easy recovery so far, and I'm sure others would feel differently.

Re: I think I'm in denial....

Well, the good news here is that you won't be an invalid! Many other sisters have recovered alone or nearly alone.

I needed my dh's help for the first few days at home. But I wasn't doing much of anything other than going to the bathroom (my walks ) and getting glasses of water for my meds (the rest of my walks ). But luckily, there's not much required of you right out of surgery!

However, after the first week or so, I really could have managed alone (except for changing the bandages) for the most part. I couldn't clean the house or cook, but those chores can be farmed out or basically ignored for a while. (Become one with the dust bunnies.... name them if you have to!)

Lay in a good supply of healthy food before you go to the hospital, and have a small cooler set up in your "recovery spot" so you can have juice, fruit, etc. by your side during the day.

You won't know what you're really facing until you go through it. What is considered difficult for one person may be really "easy" for another. My best advice would be to prepare for more than you think you'll need, and be pleasantly surprised when you don't need everything you've prepared for.

Re: I think I'm in denial....

I also had a dvh on 4-13 and would have been fine alone. I returned to full time work 7 days after. Which I don't suggest wait a least 2 weeks. But really did care for myself. My dh walked the dog for me but that was pretty much it.

Re: I think I'm in denial....

I kind of felt that I would be an invalid for the first week or so and I was very happy to see that I was getting up and around on my own without help of a nurse or partner only 12 hours post op. I was able to do everything the day I came home from the hospital other than lift my 35# kids or wash my back/behind. Just remember to do everything SLOWLY so that if it is uncomfortable, you can stop. If you do it too fast, you could have hurt it before you really felt it. It is not nearly as bad as it seems like it will be. I was up and down my stairs about 10 times my first day home which was day 2 post op.
