4 days post hysterectomy: Fluid weight gain vanity question

Hi ladies,

I would so appreciate any honest answers to this question. I can take it! I need to know if I should be investing in fat clothes!

I am a very petite person at 112 pounds prehysterectomy 4 days ago. I had a bit a blood loss and dangerously low blood pressure for a couple of days. I've been pumped with tons and tons and tons of fluids and I now weigh a whopping 126 pounds. This is a lot on my small boned, short frame. A 14 pound weight gain in less than a week is a huge amount of weight for me. I planned for fat pants, but even my new fat sweat pants aren't going around my new thighs. My face, arms look so different, it is hideous. Not helping my mental state much, but I know this is all just a vanity issue.

How long until this fluid dissipates? Will it all dissipate? I've been promised that fluid won't turn into fat, but this is just craziness. My hands, feet look like sausages.

I really hope this doesn't sound bad to my fluffy sisters. I work so hard with healthy eating and working out to maintain my shape, and seriously with my small frame this looks really, really heavy. I'm very small boned.

Thanks for any honest answers about how long the fluid gain will take to go down. Weeks, months? Healthy ways to improve loss? I'm having trouble with deep breaths and the incentive spirometer, and I don't think the extra volume is helping.

Re: Fluid weight gain vanity question

Hi there,

Like you I started out small, I was 116 pounds pre surgery. Now, just over a year later I am 120. I did keep on a few pounds, not sure if it was related or now.

As for the water retention, give it time. As long as you have swelling you will retain extra fluids. Just keep drinking water and it will help flush things out.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Re: Fluid weight gain vanity question

As for the tons of swelling, it should dissipate fairly rapidly, like within a week or so. You may continue to have some swelling around the middle (swelly belly) for several weeks. The same thing happened to me with another surgery, so I know it isn't comfortable. As recommended, drink plenty of water. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it keeps you urinating. As for vanity, just let it go. You won't be like this long, so just stay away from anyone who you believe would judge you harshly for your appearance - actually, you should probably make that a habit IMO
