Still in shock
I found out last week that I have a *very* enlarged uterus, due to multiple fibroids. After about a year of hormone treatment attempts to stop the constant flow, I went to another OBGYN and was given the verdict that a hysterectomy is the only way out in my case. I was scheduled today for surgery on Nov. 11. I have been on the Internet, and have been seeing these horror stories. I know it will not be painless, and will be inconvenient for a while. I am concerned about these stories of horrendous weight gain and full beards. I gained 10 pounds courtesy of the hormone experiments during the last year, and I do not want to have to fight off more. Can someone who has been there before me give me some info on what to expect? Thank you for being here Hyster Sister!

Hi
I know it's scary, try not to listen to the horror stories, everyone will react differently to this operation and I'm a firm believer in having a positive attitude. I had my tah/bso about 2 1/2 months ago, they took my uterus, overies, cervix everything because of endrometrial cancer ( uterine). I'm 52 years old and was in good shape going in which I'm convinced makes a difference. I've lost weight as have many others on this website and even though I'm taking no hormones, haven't grown any beards, lost any hair or any other drastic change ( a few hot flashes and a bit dry in the vaginal area, but this can be remedied). Now that my energy is returning I feel good and so happy to be rid of the cancer and the bleeding that accompanied it for most of last year. I'm sure you'll feel better too once you get over the intial surgery. The first week was painful but you'll be given painkillers if you're uncomfortable and they take care of it. I found the exhaustion of the first 6 weeks or so the hardest to handle but it's now gone.
Good luck, take this time before you're surgery to get in as good shape physically as you can and try to keep a positive attitude and not give the horror stories too much of your time.

Being nervous and scared is natural when facing such a major surgury. The most important advise is to find a Doc. that you are very comfortable and confident with. Take the time and do your research on all areas from completely understanding your own diagnosis to pre and post op. Make sure all your questions and concerns are answered. Gather everything you need to know in order to make the right decision for you.
Big hugs for you and always know that we sisters are here for you.

Still in shock
I had large fibroids and heavy bleeding and had only my uterus removed. I kept my cervix and ovaries as they were not my problem.
I am four weeks out and have noticed no changes in my skin texture, my hair is unchanged, no weight changes, I resumed my normal ovulation schedule and my energy is returning.
Yes, there was some pain and discomfort, risk to my health, loss of fertility, loss of money, time off from work and of course asking a lot of my DSO during this period.
It's important to distinguish the medical effects of having your uterus removed and having your ovaries removed. Your ovaries produce essential hormones that can help your blood pressure, weight, metabolism and bone density among other things. Did your doctors discuss your ovaries with you? Did they also discuss why you're not a candidate for myomectomy?
The internet is full of horror stories. Success stories are boring, "I had surgery, I feel better, end of story." It's human nature to retell the bad stories.
Do your best to get informed about your particular condition and don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions and if you're not satisfied, find another.
Take care.

My doctor and I had a lengthy discussion on whether or not I should keep my one remaining ovary. I had my right ovary and f-tube removed 5 years ago due to a grapefruit sized fibroid wrapped around them and there was no way to save it. Every thing went perfect and I felt wonderful after I recovered. Now I'll be going in on Sept. 10 for my Hyst. My doc and I decided that if my remaing ovary is not 100% it will come out. I adore and have the utmost respect for my doc. I've been seeing him faithfully for 10 years and he had earned my highest praises. Thus I know he will carry out my request in the truest form. No doubt there are moments of panic and I think "Ok just take it all" but realisticly, after I breath deeply, I know that I KNOW what is right for me.
big hugs to you
