Feeling blind sided
Did anyone else come home from the hospital saying "no one prepared me for this?". I did not expect to hurt this much. I expected my incisions to hurt but I had no clue about the very uncomfortable bladder pain or the painful constipation. I don't even know what to do with the complete physical exhaustion and even with my ovaries intact I feel emotionally unstable. I don't even know if anything I'm experiencing is normal. Fill me in please

Re: Feeling blind sided
It's totally normal. I felt the same way after my TAH. Rest as much as you can and concentrate on resting.

Re: Feeling blind sided
@jnilges At 8.1 weeks post op I can say its all part of healing but if any symptom is new or unbearable or really makes you concerned make sure to check it out with your doctor . Hang in there sister its going to get better. .I felt its a roller coaster recovery ride but surely there is more and more of having good days than not so good one:-) and ovaries do take time to kick in..i am not sure whether mine have started working yet need to ask my doc... healing hugs to u

Re: Feeling blind sided
I totally get what you're talking about.
When my surgeon first told me that recovery and off-work time would be 6-8 weeks, I thought to myself "this is ridiculous". They just say this as a blanket statement to cover themselves. 2-3 weeks should be more than enough."
Even at my pre-op appointment with hospital staff, they just gave me generic pamphlets about surgery. Nobody prepared me at all for what to expect; nobody told me any of the gory details. I woke up with raging pain, a catheter coming out of me, and a nurse trying to stick a maxi-pad onto me. WTHeck!
From the time I woke up in the recovery room to today (6.5 weeks for me), every day is a challenge, and something is new. I look back at the first couple of weeks, and can't believe what I went through. I think I would have completely lost my mind, had I not found this website and forum. It has really helped me to discover that others were going through the same things, and I could get advice from those who had gone before me.
On the other hand, had I known all the details of what they were going to do, what I would feel, what I would experience post-op, I very well may have backed out of the surgery. So in a way I'm glad I knew very little going in.
It really does get better, but it takes time. Every week will be a bit better than the one before. Two steps forward, one step back. Just relax, let others take care of you, and before you know it, it'll all be a distant memory.

Re: Feeling blind sided
Yes, what you're experiencing is normal. I am 4 weeks post op tomorrow and I can tell you the first day home from the hospital (day 2) was the worst, but it gets significantly better with each week. Taking a stool softener and something for gas relief should help with the constipation. Hang in there. I was severely anemic and understand the exhaustion and thought I'd never be better in 4 weeks to go back to work, but I have. It's amazing how your body can heal if you rest.

Ladies your replies make me feel so much better. This sight makes me feel like I'm not alone. It's only been 6 days maybe I should be patient with myself

Re: Feeling blind sided
My mom and sister both had the surgery and I was there through their recovery. But I really don't think there's nothing that can be said to help you cope better.
Continue to take it 1 day at a time and just rest!!!

Re: Feeling blind sided
No matter how much reading I did and how much I poured over these forums I still wasn't prepared for the down time. I didn't think I'd be this slow on my feet, I'm not suffering the fatigue a lot of women get but the bladder and bowel issues I really didn't expect this. Keep resting, its all we can do.

Re: Feeling blind sided
No one told me how intense the pain is the first week. Wow. But it does get better! I could get in and out of bed and shuffle around the house on my own by the end of the second week.
I'm 7 weeks now and feel about 80% normal.
Please just take it easy. Take your pain meds and stool softeners faithfully. It does get better!
