Re: How many calories does healing

Interesting question. I'd like to know, too!

I'm steadily losing weight but my appetite is unusually low and I'm also being more careful about what I'm eating since I'm laying around a lot, too. I was worried about weight gain but since I'm doing ok with the way things are now, I'm saving my energy and allowing my body to use it to heal. It's working out well for me.

Edited to add:

I researched this topic and found this article.

Wow, wish I'd read that article before! I'm on day 16 and lost 7 pounds. I'm eating what want but much smaller portions, just don't have a huge appetite. Walking about a mile a day. Should have though more a supplements and nutrition for quicker recovery.

Re: How many calories does healing

Me too. I had my surgery the same day as you and I've also lost the same amount of weight. I have a small appetite which is very unusual for me. I'm making an effort to increase my protein intake to avoid the further breakdown of muscle.

Re: How many calories does healing

I was constantly hungry my first 2 weeks post-op. It was actually a little alarming how much I ate. I craved healthy food - oatmeal, veggies, meat, granola, homemade chicken broth, eggs, fruit etc. I continuously snacked and ate 4 full meals a day. I didn't gain a lb. I was walking 20-30 mins/day but not enough to think I could burn off as many calories as I was eating!

My doctor said my metabolism went on overdrive to create enough energy to heal. I was lucky, I never had constipation or aversion to certain foods. Coffee tasted wierd so stopped drinking it but tasted fine again after 2 weeks.

Re: How many calories does healing

Since I had about 15 extra pounds on me, I asked the nurse in my clinic how many calories to consume after surgery. I was planning on 12-1500. She told me not to drop too much below 1500, but didn't have a problem with some calorie restriction. Healing is on schedule, and I have been losing about a pound a week, with walking as exercise. I am up to two sessions of about 30 minutes a day.
