Ovaries, Menopause, and "Passages"
I'm 41, scheduled for a TAH next week, and I thought I had made the decision to keep both ovaries (they're fine -- no growths, according to ultrasound). But I borrowed my sister's copy of the updated version of Gail Sheehy's "Passages" menopause book last night, and she maintains that even if a women opts to keep her ovaries, most women end up going through menopause within two years after a hyst anyway. Anyone have any opinions on this? Thanks.

Ovaries, Menopause, and "Passages"
Hi,
I have not read this book, but I have heard this. Here is some information I found in our Resource library at the top of the page :
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/aftermeno.html
I hope this helps some. If your ovaries are good, it is recommended to keep them. You still have many years till menopause , you would probably need hrt for several years. Our own hormones are made for our bodies, sometimes the hrt we are given does not match our bodies and cause us problems in finding hormonal balance. If you go and read in the Hormone Jungle you will see others struggling to find hormone balance.

Ovaries, Menopause, and "Passages"
Lisa,
I would vote for keeping the ovaries. I have my TVH on 6/25 and kept the ovaries. My doc. did check them out during surgery to make sure they were healthy with no problems. Sooner or later your going to go through menopause with add more to the plate now? I was orignally thinking about having mine removed too, while the doc. was in there then I started reading about menopause. It can last for years! Personally, after learning about menopause I just did not see the need to put myself through all of that now when it was not necessary. Remember you may go to go through a surgical menopause after your hyster when you do keep your ovaries. They may "go to sleep" for a while after surgery. They are in shock. I'm 11 days out and this surgical menopause is not fun.
You'll make the right decision for your body.
Blessings,
Wildflowers

Ovaries, Menopause, and "Passages"
I plan to keep my ovaries.
My sister had a TAH and kept hers. It will be five years in October and she says she still has regular cycles (she knows because she's synched with the other women in the office).
