6 months post op....oh lord!
Well I am doing great 6 months post but I did gain some weight. I am working my BUTT off....or trying to lose this weight but I am getting back to the NO energy thing again. Am I alone with the weight gain? Does anyone have any advice? I am on a 1200-1500 calorie diet, lots and lots of water, 25 mins of cardio everyday and no red meat! Help if you can

Re: 6 months post op....oh lord!
I'm going to try giving my advice once more on this forum. The last time I gave it, it was brushed off and said it was too complicated. Well, IMO, its not the easiest thing to do per individual.
First off, being on 1200-1500 calories a day doesn't necessarily mean you are going to lose weight. No red meat? IMO, that's not going to help a lot. Doing cardio EVERY day is not the answer either
It all boils down to:
1) how many calories you are intaking compared to your current weight, your activity level....job related and exercise activity.
2) remember, you need protein, carbs and FAT to keep your energy level up, compared to your activity level.....hence, if your are doing cardio every day, you have to EAT enough food to re-energize your body.
3) eat 5-6 small, healthy meals/snacks every day.
For example, if a person weighs 200lbs, they CAN'T live off of 1200-1500 calories per day. They are starving themselves, their metabolism shuts down because the body thinks its starving so it holds on to every fat/calories it gets.
A person that weighs 150lbs, probably still can't live off of 1200 calories a day, especially if they are exercising/cardio daily and aren't replenishing the body with the proper nutrients it needs to function.
Those people will be tired all of the time, have zero energy and lower the immune system.
I weigh about 120-125lbs and I should be intaking roughly 1,500 just to KEEP me alive. Its call BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate): This is the amount of calories you need to consume to maintain your body if you were comatose (base level). For my sedentary lifestyle ATM, I should be eating roughly 1,838 calories daily to MAINTAIN my weight until I'm able to get back into working out. If I put on a few pounds within a month, I will then decrease my calories by 250 per day.
First, I suggest going to dailyburn.com, register for free, track your caloric intake for a couple of weeks so you have a good idea of exactly how many your are intaking.
Activity level is BASED ON MORE THAN JUST YOUR TRAINING. It also includes work/lifestyle, sport. Average activity variables are:
1.2 = Sedentary (Little or no exercise + desk job)
1.3-1.4 = Lightly Active (Little daily activity & light exercise 1-3 days a week)
1.5-1.6 = Moderately Active (Moderately active daily life & Moderate exercise 3-5 days a week)
1.7-1.8 = Very Active (Physically demanding lifestyle & Hard exercise or sports 6-7 days a week)
1.9-2.0 = Extremely Active (Hard daily exercise or sports and physical job)
You have to start some where. Once you have an idea, then decrease by 250-500 calories per MONTH.....not per week until you lose weight. Don't weight yourself daily, weigh weekly or better yet, monthly. Losing weight too fast will make you feel bad. From what I've read over the years, you should slowly lose 1 - 2lbs per week, if you are doing it right, but it takes time to tweak it per individual.
The last time I posted the formula I use, I was scolded and told it was too complicated to try to figure out.
Also, if you don't have your ovaries, you might want to consider your weight gain being hormone related but that doesn't mean you can't lose it.....unless its thyroid related.

Re: 6 months post op....oh lord!
Aso, this is just from memory, if you eat too many carbs , it will cause weight gain.
Carbs are turned to glucose, which is converted to sugar, sugar is converted to fat. But, carbs are good also because they do give your body energy.
Protein is good..............meat, even red meat, but it should be lean.
Fats are a good energy source..........good fats like nuts, seafood, olive oil, flaxseed oil and coconut oil. Peanut butter is good in moderation.
Cut back on breads and pasta.
Eat fruits, meat & veggies and less takeout and re-packaged foods........no fried food.
Its all about portion control and moderation, but not starving.
I snack on rice cakes and reduced fat peanut butter, low fat cottage cheese, pistachios and greek yogurt.

Re: 6 months post op....oh lord!
I don't think that ur formula is too complicated. I am eating 5 times a day small portions but i dont feel like I am starving except at night. No white breads or pasta I am eating whole wheat. My uncle is a personal trainer and set me up on this diet and told me the cardio was what I need to do untill I lose 15 pounds. I am 190 atm. Bf the surgery I was 170. I had a partial hysterectomy. I lost 9 pounds in 9 days so I think my matabolisum (sp?) Is getting better plus I was also told to drink my water at super cold temps and that will help burn calories.

You might want to consider getting your thyroid checked. I was told that my hysterectomy whacked my metabolism out and my thyroid went bad, now I am on Synthroid forever. This did cause some weight gain, 10 lbs in one month. But if you are working out and eating properly then you shouldnt be gaining weight, in my humble opinion.

Re: 6 months post op....oh lord!
Mileena, thanks for being willing to post that information again. I'm going to bookmark this page so I can refer to it.
Some of us are old enough to remember the balanced diet advice that was considered the right way to eat. No real food (including red meat) was off limits except for individuals with medical reasons. We all understood that limiting sugars and starches, especially soft drinks, snacks, breads and pastas, was a good thing. Also butter and processed meats. And - here's the kicker - we were all a lot slimmer back then.
You might be interested to know that during the heyday of the grain-heavy food pyramid, I was flipping channels and happened across the day's farm report. To a lot of people it would have been shocking, but this was no surprse to me; about a third of my relatives were farmers. That particular day the monologue was all about what the US government was doing to get consumers to buy more cereals and breads so that farmers could make more money on the easiest crops to grow. THAT, my friends, was what that food pyramid was really about.

@Whatsit
Thanks, I might post that complicated formula again but I can do a quick calculation for princessred.
@princessred
Definitely get the thyroid checked.
I got mine checked and it showed nothing. I found that I wasn't consuming enough calories to support my active lifestyle. Once I corrected my caloric intake, I no longer gave out of gas and didn't fall asleep while at work....and didn't put on weight (fat).
How old are you and what's your height?

Re: 6 months post op....oh lord!
Oh, another note: I'm not a personal trainer and like I've said before, I'm going by experience here.......
Don't always rely on the scales. When you exercise, even doing cardio, you build your muscles. Muscle is more dense than fat so you might put on some scale weight.
Get a measuring tape and measure your chest, arms, thighs, hips and WAIST monthly. Write it down along with the date.
The measuring tape never lies ladies.

Re: 6 months post op....oh lord!
Actually, this is the formula I use since I have a good idea of my body fat %.
Katch-McArdle:Considered the most accurate formula for those who are relatively lean. Use ONLY if you have a good estimate of your bodyfat %.
BMR = 370 + (21.6 x LBM)Where LBM = [total weight (kg) x (100 - bodyfat %)]/100
You then multiply the formula by an 'activity variable'. This Activity Factor is the cost of living and it is BASED ON MORE THAN JUST YOUR TRAINING. It also includes work/lifestyle, sport & a TEF of ~15% (an average mixed diet).
This is the one you can use if you don't know your body fat % but is does over estimate your caloric intake a little more than the other one.
Mifflin-St Jeor: Developed in the 1990s and more realistic in todays settings. It still doesn't take into consideration the differences as a consequence of high BF%. Thus, once again, it OVERESTIMATES NEEDS, ESPECIALLY IN THE OVERWEIGHT.
MEN: BMR = [9.99 x weight (kg)] + [6.25 x height (cm)] - [4.92 x age (years)] + 5
WOMEN: BMR = [9.99 x weight (kg)] + [6.25 x height (cm)] - [4.92 x age (years)] -161
Then multiply by the above Activity factor and this should give an idea of here to start.
