Menopause with ovaries?

Hi,

I still have my ovaries and my doc seemed pretty confident that I won't go into menopause since I have them. Is that true? I had an emergency hysterectomy following the birth of my son, so my hormones are all out of wack so I have no idea what's going on in there. Have you heard otherwise? I would appreciate any advice or info on that.

Thanks,
Megan

Re: Menopause with ovaries?

Hi (((Megan)))

I have just one ovary, and it functions enough for me to not feel strong menopausal symptoms. I still get hot flashes, but not as often as those first weeks following surgery. I also don't have the sore joints that I had for a time. As far as sleep issues, I am on a different schedule. I stay up later than I used to, but I am able to sleep well. I hope that your doctor is right!

Re: Menopause with ovaries?

Hi Megan.

My doctor told me the same thing. I agree that it's hard to tell postpartum because of the fluctuating hormones. It's been 14 months since my emergency hyst postpartum, and I haven't experienced any sort of menopausal symptoms. However, I'm still breastfeeding, so it's hard to say for sure how I'll be after my baby is weaned.

Theoretically, if you have ovaries, you should be fine. There are probably others, though, who would disagree!

Crossing my fingers for both of us!

Deb

Re: Menopause with ovaries?

As long as your ovaries continue to function, you should not experience menopause! If it helps, I am almost nine years post op and mine still function! My mother's ovaries functioned for over 20 years after her hysterectomy! She didn't hit natural menopause until her early 50's.
