Help! Blood Count Low!

I just talked to the doctors office, and my blood count is low. I dontated blood on MAY 26, and have been bruising bad since. I have never done it before, and it caused my blood pressure to drop down to 85 over 55, I passed out, and my DD called an emt friend of mine.
BUT the doctors office said that if my blood count stays low, they cant do the surgery... and like all of you, I have worked too hard to arrange all my ducks in a row, and I cant have it postponned! Any quick advise ideas to raise the blood count... OTHER THAN LIVER, WONT STOP PUKING THAT UP!!! Thanks...

Help! Blood Count Low!

Hello
Call your doctor back and ask him if it would be good to take iron tablets. and how much.
My doctor placed me on high doses prior to surgery for the same reason.
best of luck

Help! Blood Count Low!

DaisyRae,

If your doctor agrees to iron pills, ask him/her about prescription strength pills. (If you want to know the name, send me a PM.)

I took the over-the-counter stuff for 4 years without much effect and finally one of the doctors I saw recently gave me a prescription. It brought my hemoglobin up to 11 (12 is bottom of normal) right before surgery. I was really glad to get there because my hemoglobin dropped to 7 after the operation. I didn't have to have a blood transfusion.

I couldn't donate my own blood due to the anemia -- some friends donated blood but better not to need it.

3 weeks post-op and now my hemoglobin is at 12.5! I'm not taking the iron pills any more.

Blackstrap molasses, red meat, spinach are all high in iron.

Iphie
