I don't think that it that the friends mother needs to "get a life", but she does need to know that everyone is different and that this surgery does not mean a holiday lost.
In 1984, the week before Thanksgiving, my sister discovered a lump in her breast. It was cancer and was agressive. They diagnosed her on a Tuesday and she had a mastectomy on Wednesday. A week later, she and her husband hosted 35 people for Thanksgiving. She was in her robe and lounged, letting everyone else do the "work". It was a great holiday for all.
Five days later, I had emergency gallbladder surgery! Yikes! Who would have thunk! I was only 27...I was a size 6....I just didn't meet the criteria, but there ya go. Anyway, I had surgery on a Wednesday....the old fashioned way...no laproscope. I was released the following Tuesday. We week later on that Friday, I was at a party in a restaurant. I couldn't stand up straight, nor could I dance with the rest of my friends, but I was there and had a ball.
Now, that being said, IF you want to get right back at it you will...if you choose/need to take longer to recoup...cool! There is no right nor wrong.....only YOU know how you will feel.
Take care of YOU!

I am having my TVH Dec. 11, 07. I already did all my shopping and I'm ready to lay back and get some rest! Don't worry about it, you have to do what feels right for you! Good luck and God bless!

Let me ask you this question: It's Dec. 26, the gifts are unwrapped, your tree's taken a beating from people rooting under it and you've got at least five items you now need to go stand in line to return. Are you regretting that you still have to surgery as well?
Holidays will always come and go. Sometimes, what we think will be our worst ends up our best. Good luck.

My TAH is scheduled for Dec. 5 also. I was a bit nervous, but am a teacher and having the two week christmas break will help financially. In addition to Xmas my oldest daughter is getting married on Jan. 5. I decided I'd rather be post-op than to attend feeling the way I have been.I have spoken to countless women who have gone through this, and hands-down they say you feel better post-op than before! I know if I follow all advice and don't push myself that i will be up and about and able to enjoy my daughter's special day!!

Sit Back and Enjoy!
Every year xmas gets crazier and crazier. By the time its over I can hardly remember any of it. I am so excited to be able to sit back and watch most of it this year instead of trying to do it all and work too.
I have been home for 6 weeks now recovering what the doc says is a 12 week recovery. I have been spending most of my time on the couch, watching as many xmas movies as I can and crocheting hats and scarves for xmas gifts. I know I cant handle the mall, so all the inlaw families are getting homemade gifts this year. Only my dh, dd and ds are getting some store bought gifts. I worked hard to simplify it all last year and found it to be much more enjoyable. This year is going to be even more simple. I hope you can find a way to relax and enjoy it too!

The only one ruining Christmas at this point is your friends mom. She should be asking if you need anything not putting a guilt trip on you.
I am having my surgery tomorrow (12/7). My shopping is as done as it's going to get. Some will get socks and a new toothbrush for gifts!! My house is as decorated as it's going to get. Its as clean as its going to get. All my cooking and planning is as done as its going to get. The best part of any holiday is spending time with family. Enjoy your time with your family and friends.
Put you feet up....wear a tiara....have some eggnog...be the photographer.
If you lift a finger it should only be to call someone over to get you some cookies.
good luck...don't forget to B-R-E-A-T-H-E!!!!
and wear your tiara!!
