You can rest, drink plenty of water, and make sure you are getting enough fiber so that you are having good and frequent BMs. Ypu can try ibuprofen or Aleve as they are both anti-inflammatories, you can ice your abdomen.

But.

You are only 4 days post op from a major surgery, and you have a long way to go, Sister! Swelling right now is completely normal, to be expected, and not much can be done about it right now.

Yes! All of these & just add ice, cold packs for swelling. It has a mind of its own & will leave when its good & ready. Not what you want to hear. Just concentrate on eating healthy, hydrate, walking. Youll slowly get there!

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy: tummy very swollen

You've just had major surgery. You could be dealing with bowel issues as suggested, could be dealing with gas used to pump your abdominal area during surgery (depends on the type of surgery you had), or it could be good old Swelly Belly .

With any injury (broken arm, sprained ankle, burn, surgery), fluids gather around the inflammation as a part of the healing process. Swelling goes down as you rest, you stay awake during the day, swelling goes up again. It's what happens to many of us around our tummies post surgery. As we heal we seem to notice it more in the evenings. Here's an article where you can read more: Tummy Care - Swelly Belly. My favorite line is So, you ask, "How do I get rid of it?" You don't. It has to go away on it's own. Best thing when it got the better of me was to rest in a reclining position, allowing both my back, tummy and core to relax.

My doctor said by week 8 I should notice it less and I did. There are still days where I feel it more, and some women are still dealing with it in month 3 and 4 - usually when they've done something they're not ready for. You can't rush it away via exercise, eating, etc. You're not alone, and yes, it will get better!

It will get better, as they say. I'm dealing with the swelly belly right now. Yesterday I put on real pants and had to take them off 3 hours later. Put your feet up and make sure you're drinking enough liquids.
