No Date: Concerned mother of 2

Hi, my name is Sarah and I'm 35. Yesterday my doctor told me the best option for my uterine fibroids and endometrosis was a hysterectomy. His plan is to remove my uterus and possibly my ovaries based on how much my endometrosis has progressed. The plan is to do it robotically and I'll schedule it next Wednesday after my endometrial biopsy (which I'm afraid will be painful). I guess I'm not afraid of the surgery it's self more of the recovery. My husband is on board and is willing to do anything and everything to care for me. So that support is there. Honestly I should be relieved to be rid of painful, heavy periods that lay me up for days but I feel this sense of loosing my womanhood. I'm so happy with the 2 children I have and never planned on having anymore (nor can I with these problems) children. I guess it the fact that the chapter in my life is closed. Are theese normal feelings? What is the best option surgically (robotic, lap, traditional?!?) and how long is it going to take me to feel "normal" again? Thanks ladies!!

Hello, I just had a full hysterectomy 4 weeks ago, one week before Christmas. It was done with the DaVinci robot. I was totally amazed! Once out of surgery and back into my room, they gave me a morphine drip that I could administer myself. I never had to use it. The nurses would keep coming in and asking me to rate my pain on a scale of 0-10...mine was always zero. It was a little uncomfortable getting my bladder and bowels working again, but that just took a few days. I was on a plane to visit my sister in Fla 4 days post-op. I just had my follow up visit today and the doctor says I'm healing very well. It is so nice not to have any more pain and constant bleeding, this was the best decision I've ever made.

In all honesty, any feelings you are having are completely normal.
There will be lots of other sisters feeling the same or similar emotions.


I was glad to have my op, after years of very heavy periods etc. The fibroids and cysts caused bloating too, so it was a relief. I am older, and my children are away at university, so I do not have the same emotional conflicts as you.

There are other Ladies here who you can relate to more closely.

THere are a lot of positive things you will get from your op, such as being free of the symptoms you have been feeling up to now.
Life will get better once you are through all the healing.

I think there will be a natural mourning period, but according to my post menopause mom and 2 post hysterectomy friends, they say they felt better, more "in the mood", and became better moms/wifes after all the female issues were gone. That's what I'm hoping for. I also have 2 miracle kids, and I can't wait to give them all the energy that my female parts have been stealing from them for the last 10 years.
