Shaving

THAT IS AWESOME!!! My surgery is tomorrow and I did mine today. Nothing like a fresh start!
I am sure my Dr. will get a smile out of it. Good luck on your trip to the castle! I will let everyone know how I am when I get back!

Questions about pre-op shaving

Hi!

This comes too late for anyone who has already done a pre-op shave, but for anyone else contemplating this--please don't unless your doctor requests that you shave prior to arriving to the hospital. Many doctors prefer that any necessary shaving be done at the hospital. You don't want to run the risk of an infection to deal with on top of your surgery recovery.

Please call and ask your own doctor about pre-op shaving if you didn't already.

Pre op shave

Thanks for the input. However, I have never heard of anyone getting an infection from shaving. Lots of us do that kind of maintenance on a regular basis anyway.
P.S. I talked to my doctor this afternoon (we have been good friends for years) and he just cracked up when I told him I had already done it.

I'm glad it will work out for you. I have heard of surgeries being postponed for this reason so I did want to add the caution.

Questions about pre-op shaving

Hi!

My friend told me to shave myself before my surgery because if I didn't they would do it for me, so I did. Just before I went into surgery I told the nurse that I had taken care of the shaving myself. She then told me that some doctors do insist on you being shaved while others don't. Guess what? My doctor is one of the doctors who doesn't have his patients shaved - of course that would happen. Anyway, when they shaved my friend she was awake and they told her to stay still and stop moving around, she said she almost died of embarassment - so you decide.

In my case, I asked my friend if it was her idea of a sick jock. I know it wasn't, but it is a funny after surgery story anyway. It hasn't been that bad with it growing back.

Hi shortypie. Actually people have gotten infections from shaving, due to a nick/small cut on the skin. Basically what it does is leave that open area(s) exposed & you could have a potential risk for infection....I am talking risk for infection in the OR..not at HOME. I shave too, plus it is summer time and yeah, I wear a swim-suit. However, the day before my surgery I won't be shaving. If your doctor is one of them that wants you shaved...they use electric razors/clippers to remove the hair at at the site of your surgery.

Best of luck to you.

Questions about pre-op shaving

Mine said don't bother. They would do it after I was under. When I got home I realized just how little they did, and I had a urethra/bladder sling too! They didn't go crazy with the clippers at all, just the pubic line where my incision is. Don't worry about it. They have seen it all, I am sure!

Heehee, you are correct. I'm a RN and have worked on many units, including the OR, and yeah, as you said...they/we seen it all!

Actually, each doctor and each hospital has different procedures. Each lady needs to check with her own doctor and her hospital as to what to expect and what to do or not do. Some doctors do NOT want you to shave yourself prior to surgery, especially if you do not shave on a consistent basis as there is more chance of nicks, cuts, irritations, etc. that can affect surgery.

And not all doctors even have patients shaved these days. I had the LAVH and was not shave at all. Not even a tiny bit.

So if any one has questions about your particular situation, call and check with your doctor and your hosptial. s
