ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
Ive been having tenderness in the adbominal area, a lot of changes in my menstrual cycle and thought it was just normal changes as you get older. I had a transvaginal ultrasound done on 11/30/06 and the findings were two large bilateral masses that is most consistent w/ endometriomas, which as I understand, my ovaries were affected by the indometriosis. im scheduled for a radical hyst. on the 22nd of Jan.
But the blood results of a ca125 test was a little high at 382. So I am now scheduled for another doc appt to better determine where to have the surgery.
I need your wisdom and advise on getting the best care possible.
Much Needed

Endometrioma...and Encouragement
Hi Sherry,
I hope I can offer some support and encouragement. I had an endrometrioma that they were very concerned about (the size of my fist) removed from inside my ovary via laparoscopic surgery that was converted to a small laporotomy (1 1/2" bikini cut) due to endometriosis…and they also removed as much of the endometriosis as possible and saved both ovaries (and the biopsies came back normal). At the same time, I also had a complex cyst on my other ovary (which eventually went away on its own before the surgery). At the time, I experienced the same pain/tenderness that you describe, which is what initially brought me in to the doctor many years ago (however, I don’t recall having a blood test for ca 125 at the time). I recovered very quickly from that surgery and did great until the middle of last year when I began having some tenderness and painful periods again. I could tell that the endo was back, and an ultrasound & biopsy of the uterus revealed pre-cancerous cells (complex hyperplasia with atypia)…so I was told I needed a hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries (in this case, the pain became a blessing because it made me go in and get tested…so they caught the uterine changes early).
My surgery was performed LAVH (laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy) in August by my incredible gyn/surgeon and assisted by a gyn/oncologist surgeon, both who specialize in the LAVH type of surgery…which resulted in a rapid recovery with only a few tiny little scars. They took out everything this way, including the tedious work of separating many organs that had been severely affected and adhered to each other due to the endo.
I’m not sure if it is a possibility of talking to your surgeon to see if they do this type of surgery since it is coming up on the 22nd, but it’s definitely worth discussing this option…as it is your body and your recovery! Although it has only been four months since my surgery, I can tell you that it is such a blessing not to have the constant tenderness in my ovaries and pain/bleeding every month!
I will be praying for you and your upcoming surgery…and for a quick recovery!
Blessings,

ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
Hey Sherry,
I too was wondering about ovarian cancer. The funny thing is neither my Doc or my Obgyn has taken blood from me. I was supose to have the transvaginal ultrasound but he did a biopsy instead last thursday. They are giving me a hysterectomy in Feb but I am not sure if I can stand the pain for that long. I am having my uterus and cervix removed but they think I should keep my ovaries since I am only 33. I have already had a cyst rupture and the ultrasound that I had a few weeks back showed more cysts. So now I am concerned with cancer!

ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
Hi Sherry,
It is great that you are seeking information. You said you are seeing another Dr., do you what the specialty is? Endometriomas are cysts in the ovary caused by endometriosis. A CA 125 can be elevated due to endometriosis, infections and other reasons in addition to cancer. It is good that your Dr. has had one done in case yours turns out to be a cancer, which I am not saying it is. Should it be cancer, the CA 125 is usually very helpful in determining that treatment is working.
The only way for the doctors to know what the cyst is would be removal and pathology. Many times, cysts are benign. The unfortunate thing is that with all the technology out there, they can only make an educated guess before surgery based on the characteristics of the cyst on the scans.
When do you see this other Dr.? Please let us know what you find out.

I just wanted to drop in and agree with ((Jane)). I also wanted to ask you which type of doctors are you seeing? Have you met with a GYN/oncologist? How about an endometriosis specialist?
Do keep us posted! Lots of s to you!

ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
Dumpy-
we have identical histories--
my CA 125 was 440--
i had bilateral "complex ovarian masses" the size of baseballs.
severe abdominal pain led to a trip to my doc, then ultrasounds, ct scan where masses were discovered, same day ca125 blood test with 440 level.
all this in a 48 hour period-- from onset of pain to surgery.
no previous diagnosis for endo or any other female health issues, ever.
looked like ovarian C on the scans, plus the ca125 result.
thankfully-- it was not C--
i had stage IV endo + 2 endometriomas (one had ruptured causin the pain).
everything removed.
so please know, you also have an excellent chance of having what i, and many others on the site have had.
take a deep breath-- know that you are not alone!

ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
Hi Jane,
Sorry its taken so long to respond. I have a 3 1/2 yr old that doesn't let me have to much time on my own. I'm glad you asked about the doc. because i didn't know. I called and found out that she is an oncology/gyn and my appt is monday the 15th.
Also I do not understand why they can't determine cancer before surgey. What do biopsy show.?
Thanks for caring and responding to my concerns.
Sherry

ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
ohh my goshhh
I was in tears today for the first time. I had a few extra minuets before the end of my work day so I decided to read some of the info i pulled off the net. I was reading about ca125 tests and they gave some reason way they could be elevated for non cancer reasons and some examples for cancer. Postive cancer readings showed a count of 65, so that put me in a panic because no one could tell me if 400 was high or not. My best friend past from O Cancer at age 45 and she was the healthest person I new. I'm 42 and the last of 13 children, 4 sisters and 8 brothers, both my father and mothers side of the family have around the same amount of childern with little or no history of cancer.
So i was pretty comfortable about everything until i read that.
Thank you so much for giving me back my sanity for the weekend. My appt with an ancoloy/gyn is on monday. I'm very hopeful now...
Thank you
Dumpy

ovarian concerns and ca125 results of 382/seeking advise
It is my understanding that when an ovarian cyst may be cancer, they prefer to romove it whole. If the cyst is punctred or ruptures, the spillage raises the risk of spreading cancerous cells in the abdomen.
Mine was staged 1C as mine did leak while being carefullu removed (it was adhering to the bowels) so even though the abdominal washings were negative for cells, they could not be sure that seeding had not occured and I had 3 chemo treatments.
Researchers are working on tests which would diagnose ovarian cancer prior to surgery, but so far the accuracy rate is not acceptable.
