As soon as swelly belly hits (usually soon after I am up and around) I look almost as big as pre surgery when I had the Fibroid family inside me. I do look forward to the day of no swelly belly!

Re: Weight loss and loss of appetite

You ladies are definitely not alone. As far as anyone saying that a hysterectomy makes you gain weight...I have to disagree. It doesn't "make" you gain weight. Here is an interesting article about weight gain after hysterectomy:

https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_327836.htm

As far as the losing weight...I don't really know if that is caused by the hysterectomy itself, but it sure does seem to be a common occurrence at least for a while after surgery. I am sure some of it is hormonal, but I can't say for sure.

I lost my appetite after my surgery as well. When I do want to eat, I crave healthier things than I used to. I used to be a completely chocoholic, but now, I hardly ever eat it. I crave fresh fruits and veggies more than anything.

I am like a lot of you, I get full very quickly. I lost 35 pounds after my hysterectomy, but my says that is not normal. We are still in the process of finding out what is causing the lack of appetite and weight loss....with no luck yet.

I urge you all to keep an eye on your weight and if you are losing an unhealthy amount of weight, please call your doctor so that you can find out the cause of it.

I'm happy for those of you who have lost weight that may have needed to, just please make sure that it isn't too much.

Re: Weight loss and loss of appetite

My surgery was on the 16th. I have only lost a few pounds. I have had a lot of problems going to the washroom depending on the food I eat. I went back to just having Isagenix shakes for breakfast and Lunch which have helped me with the cramping. One day I had cravings so had Nachos with salsa for lunch and pizza for supper. The next day I thought that I was going to die so no more for me... especially the greasy food. I guess I will eat healthier now and hopefully will lose the weight that I had gained going into menopause the 2 years before the cancer hit. Menopause is back even stronger than before but I will not let it take over my life this time. It is the menopause that makes you gain the weight and that is how I had already gained it before so now time to get that weight off. Lots of walking with my sticks and weights and I should be able to get off the 20 pounds by the end of the summer.

I went for my checkup today and I am down 15lbs! I hate it took a hysterectomy to loose but I am glad it's happening! I'm a BIG girl so I can stand to loose all I can.

This gives me comfort and scares me at the same time, as far as it could be a long term problem. I'm dealing with too much weight loss as well. I can't eat much at all and if I try to eat more my body gets sick, it has made recovery horrible and long, I've had a lot of other complications so not being able to eat is making my body struggle even more with healing. I'm almost less than 100lbs at 5'6" and it's not pretty. I see my doctor again tomorrow and praying for good ideas! I've been watching this post hoping an idea would pop up to stop the problem If anyone has ideas or reasons for why this is happening I'd love to hear it, I want food , I need energy to care for my young babes.

Re: Weight loss and loss of appetite

Thank you for posting this topic. I posted another very similar one just this morning.

I am now 4 weeks post op. During the first 3 weeks, I lost about 11 pounds, but then gained 5 back over the last week. My appetite has just started to pick up. Honestly, I had almost NO appetite for the first 3 weeks, like many of you. I eat pretty healthy, and have definitely noticed my portions are smaller. I just hope I can get back to the "losing" side, which is really *winning* in my book!

I don't want to be too consumed with the weight. I think the appetite is just picking up before I can get back to normal activity.

Wow...you must be tiny!! I know how you feel though. I am 5'9 115 lbs....not pretty at all! You are right, you need nutrients to help you heal and give you energy....try drinking some protein shakes and smoothies...those help me out a lot. I add ice cream to both, which helps with flavor and adds some fat and sugar that I need!! I tried Ensure, but hated the taste, so I added some vanilla ice cream and that made it tolerable!! Give it a try. I would also call your since it does seem like you are losing an unhealthy amount of weight.

You totally get it! I have been adding protein powder where I can and ice cream is a saving grace! I am lucky to eat two sad snack sized "meals" a day. I went to my doctor today and we are hoping it is due to the complications caused to my ureter and kidney during surgery. I am having surgery tomorrow to remove the stint in my kidney and repair my kidney and we are hoping after tomorrow I may start feeling better! It's hard enough to lose my uterus and to recover from the multiple repair surgeries too, I'd love to feel better and be able to move on, to have energy and live life again as my new self!

Hugs to everyone and many blessings sent for everyones recovery! May weight loss or weight gain not inhibit anyones recovery and may we all love ourselves no matter what!!
