Stupid Questions

Ok, here goes:
My doc is going to do a TAH and take one ovary. So I'm trying to figure out some silly things. This is hard for me to get my head around so please forgive me for being so blonde.
1. Will I still get yeast infections?
2. Will I still need to duche?
3. Will I still smell and need to duche?
4. Will I be dry during sex?
I always thought moisture comes from the uterus and cervix but it seems from what I'm reading that it's from somewhere else.
Sorry, told you I'm lost in this area. I had no mother to teach me stuff.

Re: Stupid Questions

First of all, no question is ever stupid. I am not a doctor, although I am married to one...but that doesn't count in this response or any others I post to this site.
1. yeast infections are caused from an imbalance in your vagina which is not being removed so yes, you could still get them. Certain antibiotics are especially bad for me; I've even joked about getting a twin pack...antibiotic with monistat for the complete package.
2. douching is bad for you and can in fact lead to yeast infection because it disturbs the natural balance in your vagina. My gyn says he doesn't recommend douching and if you feel you absolutely must, then vinegar and water, mild and very infrequent. [I used to douche frequently and had chronic yeast infections]
3. Odors? If you are talking about the odor that is normal after your period, you won't have to worry about that one after hyst. If you are talking about an odor that is accompanied by discharge, then you need to see your doctor.
4. If you keep an ovary, you shouldn't be dry. Although, the older we get, the dryer we become...from our skin, hair, eyes and yes, even the vagina. Vaginal moisturizers can be purchased OTC such as Replens, if needed or something as simple as KY jelly, if needed.
I hope this helps. I have my mother, but trust me, she never talked about issues like these. Please know that there is a wealth of information on this site and plenty of systers to support you and just give a cyber hug when needed. (((hugs))) to you

Re: Stupid Questions

I'm great at thinking of the off the wall stuff lol. As for the ducheing (sp?) I always duche in the shower with just warm water. It's a habit I've had for years. I don't like how I smell after sex and after my period. It's not so bad that it would knock your head off but it's enough for me to notice. I guess I'm a little OCD about some things.

Re: Stupid Questions

I also have to say thank you, for asking questions I didn't know I wanted the answers to.
If you are douching with plain water it shouldn't cause problem, however the nothing in the vagina rules still applies!!! Remember that our water is recycled from what we have previously used and even though a great many things are filtered out in the process you can never be too careful while healing.

Re: Stupid Questions

In short:

I have never had a yeast infection before or after my hysterectomy which was 10 years ago. Wait, my mom "shared" a yeast infection when I was still in diapers, but that doesn't count!

I have never needed to douched and still don't need to douche.

I have plenty of moisture for sex as moisture can be secreted from glands in the vagina and since I have my ovaries, my hormones are okay and allow this secretion to continue. With one functioning ovary, you could be okay as well.

Really, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask!
