Upcoming hysterectomy 5/4: Need Tips To Prepare, Very Nervous
I have an op appointment April 30 for hysterectomy. Is there anyway I can prepare myself for this surgery? I go tommorrow for an ultra sound so the dr can see what all he has to remove. I was confident about all this until today and now nervousness has really kicked in. I don't know how to prepare for surgery or recovery😟

Re: Need Tips To Prepare, Very Nervous
Hi Suzie, it is scary and fear is a normal response to the unknown. Check the posts and you will find wonderful suggestions from many compassionate women who will answer all your questions. Unfortunately I can't help with preparation because my surgery was an emergency and I didn't find out exactly what was done till post op, I just signed all the forms on the trolley before they gave me an anaesthetic. This site has been my saviour, I was totally ignorant and now I think I should get a diploma. The very best of luck to you, sending hugs

Re: Need Tips To Prepare, Very Nervous
do not be afraid to ask for valium or xanax to get you through the before jitters. I have an RX for 20 at home waiting to be filled the week before or so.....and having it helps my anxiety...just having it there. It doesn't turn me into a zombie, it just physically takes the edge of....easier to quiet my brain.

Re: Need Tips To Prepare, Very Nervous
I agree.
My dr is very conservative when it comes to narcotics and benzo type of drugs. I was so anxious the weeks leading up to surgery that I could barely keep it together at work. I also went off the pill right when I found out about my fibroid, so I was detoxing off that as well. My hormones were a mess. It wasn't pretty.
He ended up giving me a prescription for Busperone. It really did the trick, also without the sleepiness etc. Check it out on Wikipedia.
I thought that would be worth mentioning.
And as far as preparing, you have come to the right place! Read through the pre-op forum, and stay out of the post-op forum. It may just make you more nervous. I can't stress enough how valuable this site was (and still is) for me. The anxiety before surgery is way worse than the surgery experience itself.
If I can do this....anyone can! Please reach out to me with any questions you may have.
Hang in there Sister!

Re: Need Tips To Prepare, Very Nervous
It is so normal to be nervous, I was scared to death! The good news is the Drs and nurses were so great when I went in and helped me feel at ease. The best advice I can give you is ask a lot of questions in your pre op, your dr can tell you everything they will do, and what you can expect as far as time in the hospital, pain and meds afterwards, what activities you can/can't do and for how long. After that, you should have a pretty good idea of what you can expect. The other advice would be not to read post op forum until after your surgery, any little complication that someone mentions will just make you feel more nervous, and chances are that you will never have that complication! Good luck to you!

Re: Need Tips To Prepare, Very Nervous
I did a lot of mental preparation prior to my surgery; visualization, meditation, and just long periods of deep breathing, especially at night when I went to bed. The thing that helped me prepare was making a kind of mental visualization board of all the things I wanted to do and was looking forward to doing once all this was over and I wasn't living with the fibroids and endo anymore. I wouldn't be missing out on fun things because I was home in bed with killer cramps, or I could actually enjoy sex because it wouldn't be so painful. All the ways that my problems affected my life were going to be gone and that was a good way to keep myself positive about it. This has also helped me with my recovery, especially on days when I have been exhausted or moody while my hormones have balanced out. I believe that so much of our healing is dependent on our outlook. Yes, it's scary going in, but think of all the things you've missed or the way you have had to work around whatever illness you've been struggling with, and imagine how much better things will be once you don't have those problems!
