Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

I'm 14 weeks postop TAH and my hair has started to fall. I read it can be post-traumatic hair loss because surgery is considered a very stress moment for the body, anyone else?

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

I had my surgery 2/13/14. Exactly three months later my hair started falling out. I had shoulder length and have had to keep going shorter . My dermatologist thinks it's from the surgery and that it will right itself in a couple of months ( will I still have hair). My iron levels were tested and mine were actually too high ( I love beef and use an iron skillet). She recommended biotin and men's Rogaine. Have it checked by dermatologist.

Apparently is something call Telogen Effluvium, post-traumatic hair loss. Also drinking biotin and vitamin B! Thanks for the support...you just don't know what can come about as part of this recovery road!!

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

I had my hair cut the day before my hysterectomy and my hair dresser told me that the anesthesia can remain in your hair for months and to expect hair changes because of that....I am just over a month post op and my hair feels a lot more coarse and is also falling out more than usual.

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

Hi Everyone,
I am 4 months post-op hysterectomy and into full menopause. For the last month or so I have been losing a lot of hair. Had some blood work done,,,thyroid,...anemia,,vitamin D and female hormone panel. All was fine except I have low estrogen. I cannot use HRT. Does the hair loss stop at some point? Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

I can only hope so! Mine is still so bad, that when I lean over the toilet to comb after a shower, it looks like it used to, when I cleaned my brush after a week you say you cannot use HRT. I am assuming something to do with breast CA. I use bioidentical hormones and my DR had a previous breast CA pt on them. So worth looking into. I feel so much better on them (I tried regular HRT and they made me feel terrible).

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

I'm seeing a dermathologist in 2 weeks. All labs came in fine, and since I kept my ovaries Gyn said is not hormonal.

It is fustrating, and trying to not stress out about it is hard. Hope all goes well for all!!

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

Stress causes hair to fall out. Try not to stress, it grows back...

Re: Hair loss - 3 months Post-op hysterectomy

Hi...Have you seen your dermatologist yet? I was wondering what they said or if there's anything that can be done.
Thanks!
