Prednisone and surgery

Has anyone here been on prednisone (corticosteroid)before they had there hyster? I have had a bad allergic reaction to Paxil and I have been given a perscription for prednisone for it. The problem is I am have TAH on the 24th and she said I might have to put off surgery because it effects healing. I was just wondering if I should even take it? If anyone here was on it while they had their surgery I would like to know if you had any problems and if so what they were. Or advice if I should take it or just let the hives wear off on their own.

Prednisone and surgery

I wasn't on Prednisone at the time of my hyst but I was on it when I had my 2nd lap. surgery a couple yrs ago. I had been on it for 1 week and the last dose was 3 days before my surgery. My DR went ahead and did the surgery since it was an out-patient procedure and not "major surgery."
I did have a harder time recovering from that surgery than the first. My healing seemed to take almost 3 times longer. I ended up with an infection that just didn't wanna go away. I just felt completely icky ~ like I had the flu the entire 1st week after the lap.
The DR said it was due to the steroids and the only thing we could do was wait it out and keep putting more antibiotics in me.

My son had a simular experience when he had his foot surgery. He was on Prednisone because of his asthma. After surgery, he ended up having to stay in the hospital 17 days instead of the expected 2-3 days.

Definately talk to your DR and as hard as it may be, you may have to postpone your hyst. I know that's probably frustrating ~ especially if you've been waiting just to have the surgery done. Personally, if it were me, I would wait until the steroids were either out of my system or there was only a minimal amount still in there.
I do hope this doesn't put your surgery off, but for your own health and comfort, it may just be the best thing to do. Good luck.

Prednisone and surgery

I haven't been on it, myself, but my father has been for many years. He has had to have many surgeries and the prednisone has caused problems with all of them. Long term use definitely effects the skin and makes healing difficult. After one abdominal surgery, he split wide open again, weeks later, because the stitches and staples wouldn't hold.

I don't know how long you have been on it, or how long it takes before it can cause these problems, but I think you are wise to question and get more information.
