1 week to go and this RN is getting nervous
My TAH/BSO for endometrial cancer is scheduled 11/17/04. I'm an RN but definitely functioning now as a nervous patient. I was only diagnosed a week ago, so have had to adjust rather quickly! I've been reading everything I can get my hands on and now that I have the medical "stuff" fairly straight in my head, I find myself most drawn to this site. The support I've seen here among the HysterSisters is awesome. I'm not worried about the diagnosis and felt confident that I'll be "cured" with the TAH/BSO. If I'm wrong and need chemo or radiation, I'll deal with it. I had my preop visit with my GYN doc yesterday and tomorrow I meet the Gyn/Onc fella and also go for my pre-admission testing. Thanks for listening!

1 week to go and this RN is getting nervous
Hi Barbara!
It's great to have you as a member of the Hyster Sisters community! It just goes to show that, even if our members are in the medical profession and are aware of all the "facts" surrounding the surgery, we can still be of assistance with our listening ears and open hearts!
I had the same surgery as you (but for different reasons) and, although it took longer than I anticipated for me to "feel myself" again, I told my DH today that "I feel better now than I have in a long, long time." I hope that someday, you will feel wonderful, too!
Many s and Best Wishes to You!

1 week to go and this RN is getting nervous
Hi Barbara,
I'm not a nurse, but it seems to me that being a patient and being a nurse are two totally different things - it seems that it would be impossible to keep feelings out of having to have surgery! The waiting is really the worst part! Just had my 2 week post op visit and as far as the surgery is concerned, it really wasn't as bad as thought it would be, in fact, was pleased at how well it went. Don't get me wrong, the first couple weeks are no picnic, but "do-able. "
As far as your cancer diagnosis is concerned, we'll all keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Keep us informed!

1 week to go and this RN is getting nervous
Hi Barbara, I had the same surgery 2 weeks ago. I'm usually a very calm person and made myself aware of all that I was facing and then I fell completely apart a few days before the surgery.
I felt so very vulnerable, even though I had 100% trust in my surgeon and facility I was going to.
I wish I had listened to all the women that told me "it" was the best thing they'd ever done! My recovery is ahead of schedule, I'm up and around until I feel it's nap time. I'm enjoying my time away from my 6th graders, although I'm visiting my classroom tomorrow to reassure them that I'm going to be alright since I probably scared them with my behavior prior to surgery!
Prayers are being sent your way, good luck!

Barbara, I am scheduled for TAH/possibly BSO on the same day as yours. It makes me feel a bit better to hear that you are nervous also. I have been terrified and on a roller coaster. Some days I feel confident and comfortable...other days I am an emotional wreck. I have already had 4 1/2 weeks to worry about this. Some days I have really felt like I am over-reacting...especially when everybody tells me "Don't worry, you will be fine". I don't think I have ever felt so emotional in my life. I wish you the best on the 17th. Also afterwards with your recovery from surgery and the opportunity to beat the cancer!

Thanks so much for all the supportive words, thoughts and prayers from those who've been through this and also the other Ladies in Waiting. It's really helpful to me to remember there are others facing the same thing on the same day, or within a couple of weeks. You'll all be in my thoughts and prayers too, and we can communicate on the post-op board before you know it.

Hi barbara
I too am a nurse. I had my hyst in Jan 2004. Its very difficult as you know, with your background in the medical field. You are more aware than the average person of anything and everything that can happen. I felt too, funny sort of being on the other side of the desk. Best wishes with your procedure, and believe me when I tell you, it will all work out in the end. God bless, carol

1 week to go and this RN is getting nervous
Barbara,
I am also a RN. I think that we have just enough medical knowledge to make us more scared than the average person...lol...
I am having TAH/BSO/colectomy tomorrow, and my nerves have been going nuts for a week or so. I am thinking the waiting is the hardest part.
The one thing that does suck about being a nurse is having to share a room... I always worry more about the patient next to me than myself, so my boss has gotten me a private room (thank god!!!) I definately don't need to be stressed during that time (esp. since i will be in hosptial 5-7 days.)
I also got to pick my anesthesiologist (a perk), so I have the best in the hospital.
Good Luck and this next week will go fast!! Just keep busy, and stay positive. I will let you know how mine turns out.
Erin

Thanks baily and ebumgar for the nurse to nurse encouragement, it means a lot. Ebumgar, best of luck tomorrow and I hope all goes very well for you. Luckily, the hospital where I'll have my surgery has all private rooms, so I won't be tempted to help care for a roommate either. I went for pre-admission testing today and the nurse there was great with pre-op teaching. Thanks again to all of the hystersisters for the encouraging words. You're a terrific bunch!
