Gassy Foods to Avoid

I am having LAVH with TVT Jan 31, I want to make sure my hubby knows what foods to NOT cook for me, as he will be helping me a lot afterwards.
I know to stay away from saucy foods, onions, lettuce, but do any of you have any suggestions?
Thank you all for your support!
Cheryl

Gassy Foods to Avoid

Cheryl,

My doctor did not give me a list of foods to avoid. You mention lettuce as an example of what to avoid- I actually ate as much lettuce and other fruits and veggies as possible to get my bowels moving, and I never had gas or constipation. The doc also gave me a suppository while in the hospital; I drank plenty of fluids and walked a lot.

I found that I craved lighter foods- salads, yogurt, soup, pasta; I avoided very rich foods and large servings of meat. I had a very easy recovery.

beans and cruciferous veggies

from the cabbage family, including brocalli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts, not such a good idea immediately post-op. Some women also get gas from prunes, raisins and fiber supplements like metamucil too, but the gas helps expel the stool, so can't win for losing on that one. Members of the allium family like the onions and garlic you mentioned, also on the "to avoid" list.

Milk is one thing that I was getting gassy from and had no idea until I switched to soy. Lactose intolerant.

Simethicone products like gas-x and phazyme are practically a must for any princess. Fast acting is superior.

I did a lot of cooking and freezing pre-op. Dh sure enjoyed all that chili without me . Soup I made went fast. I also craved rare roast beef for awhile post op but I think that was my anemia talking to me.

I know you didn't ask about this, but I found coffee was a huge bladder irritant post-op. Bladder can be finicky post-op, even without repairs. And coffee can create a lot of stomach acid. Water is the best.

In addition

Avoid all carbonated beverages. Water with a few slices of lemon or a splash of cranberry juice were my favorites for weeks.

Your appetite will most likely be down for the first few weeks---at least mine was. I was only able to eat half of what I used to for awhile. I craved comfort foods---especially homemade soups......and baked chicken and mashed potatoes!
