Surgery this coming week
Hello Ladies,
It has been so helpful to read your posts. It doesnt feel quite so alone with all of you going or having been through this. My TAH/BSO is scheduled for this coming Thursday, December 20th. I am a little nervous but ready to get it over with having thought about it for a month now. I have been in a lot of pain for several months with endo. It has gotten progressively worse. Does anyone know if doctors routinely look for endo on other parts of the body where it might have spread? Also does taking HRT affect any endo that might be left somewhere in the body? Thanks for everything.

Surgery this coming week
Hi there and best wishes with your upcoming date at the Castle!
I had the same type of surgery as you (TAH/BSO) 2 1/2 weeks ago - primarily for Endo. Turned out had Adeno also (can only be found through pathology report after uterus is removed.)
My doctor put an HRT patch on me during surgery due to shock my body would have with removal of ovaries (he talked to me about it before surgery). We discussed at length many times my concerns about any leftover Endo - especially since I read here on the site about Endo feeding on Hormones. I asked him repeatedly both before and after surgery (each day during his rounds at the castle) if it was ok to have HRT that early. He assured me very confidently that he got all of the Endo - that he did indeed check everywhere. He was much more concerned about the shock my body would have with no Hormones than the POSSIBLE return of endo. His feeling was that the need to immediately start HRT overrode the concerns of possible endo return.
My suggestion is to talk to your doctor about it. You will probably get a mix of replies from ladies whose doctors felt they should wait 6 weeks or more to insure all possible endo seeds have died, and like me started HRT right away because doctor was confident he got it all during hyst.
I trust my doctor implicitly (he delivered both my boys c-section, did my laparoscopy and now my Hyst - been going to him for 14 years) so I am confident that together we made the right decision for me. From a hormonal standpoint, I have felt great. I really don't think I've experienced any hormonal symptoms (possibly a hot flash here or there, maybe some tears but those are normal after what our bodies have been through. Plus I'm the type to cry during Hallmark commercials anyway!)
Again - read the other replies you get and talk to your doctor to come to a decision together. Best wishes! You'll be in my thoughts this week as you prepare for your surgery!

My surgery is also on the 20th. You might find some good answers from the ladies in post-op. You could also do some searches on the topics that interest you the most. Don't be afraid to post in the differnt message boards. All the ladies in here are great and someone will have the answers your looking for.
God Bless
Sue

Surgery this coming week
Sglover,
Mary Sue (who posted above) and I both had surgery about two weeks ago and have been comparing notes on the treatments recommended by our docs. Like Mary Sue, I had stage 4 endo with lots of adhesions, history of fibroids too. I had a TAH/BSO on November 29th and my doc wants me to stay off estrogen for 6 months. This is very controversial among the docs ... many put women on estrogen immediately.
My surgery was done by my ob/gyn and a gyn oncologist in town who actually trained my ob/gyn. Both agreed that I should begin taking Megace (a progestin) after surgery, along with a Soy supplement to lessen the impact of no estrogen.
At 15 days post op, I can tell you that the menopausal symptoms are there but not too bad. I have night sweats, but I do get back to sleep. Also a few hot flashes during the day but not too bad.
I think part of this depends on your age at removal of ovaries ... I'm 46 and probably was not producing as much estrogen as someone age 35. So maybe it's not as dramatic for me (or maybe I still have some estrogen in my body). Whatever the case, after going through this BIG surgery, I don't want a recurrance of the endo and am willing to try it without estrogen for 6 months, if possible. This is probably the most aggressive and conservative approach, maybe it's overkill, but I'm doing it because I trust my docs. I know Mary Sue feels the same way about her doc, so I think we would both tell you to trust your doc and do what he or she recommends. Best of luck!
Beth
