Re: Hospital Stay....how long? can you request more than one night?

Hi Bazzy, I had a LAVH/BSO. I went home the same day I had my surgery. Granted, my surgery was the first of the morning, and I was back in my room by noon. The doc told me I could likely be released the same day if I was able to walk, eat, pee, and my pain was under control. He also told me that if I didn't want to go home, I didn't have to, AND I could certainly choose to stay another night if I didn't feel ready to go home. I think if after one night, if you really don't feel ready or you are having complications, they won't force you out of the hospital if you ask to stay. I wanted to get back to my own house and away from the constant hospital noises. Hope this helps!

Re: Hospital Stay....how long? can you request more than one night?

I stayed two nights as I was quite uncomfortable overnight and through the next day- had some vomiting so the surgeon felt it best for me to stay. By the evening of day two I was feeling much much better and probably could have gone home but figured I might as well stay that second night! Super happy to get out of the next morning though!

Re: Hospital Stay....how long? can you request more than one night?

Im having a LAHV too. Doc says that I should only be there for a day, but if there is any discomfort I have the option to stay a second night. Im hoping not though, cuz I always seem to feel better when I come home to my 3 puppies that are so excited to see me!

I was in 4 days as far as requestng another night that depends on a number of things, insurance being one of them. And what the surgeon normally does as well

Re: Hospital Stay....how long? can you request more than one night?

I went home same day, and couldn't imagine staying longer. My dh doesn't make a good hospital companion. I was a 730 surgery, back in my room by 10:30 and out by 3:00. The nurses said I was ready sooner, but dr. never releases before then.

Re: Hospital Stay....how long? can you request more than one night?

I had a TAH/BSO, which generally comes with a slightly longer hospital stay. My gynecologist said to expect a stay of three days. My gyn onc said 3-4.

When push comes to shove, however, the length of your stay depends on how you're acting and feeling.

By Day 2, I could walk around the ward by myself, sit upright in an armchair for long periods, and keep liquids down. My guts were beginning to emit promising gurgles.

By Day 3 I was eating solid food and passing gas. My narcotic pain meds were cut off at 8 AM. No significant increase in pain resulted. The doctor on duty asked about my situation at home (single, live in small apartment building, no stairs, other tenants will be assisting during recovery, can pound on wall to get help). Then she said I could be released that day or the day after, depending on which I felt more comfortable with.

I opted for immediate release, but my roommate had surgery the day before I did and was released the same day I was. She and her husband were more comfortable with having her spend one more day in the hospital.
