LASIK right after Hysterectomy?

Hi everyone! I need to schedule my Laposcopic hyster l (spelling? - it's to be through the small abdominal incisions). Anyhow, suppose to be 2 weeks off work/recovery. I've been considering LASIK and will need to have my contacts out for 2 weeks so... I was thinking for the 2 weeks of hyster recovery, I'd have my contacts out and then go for my LASIK exam (monday) and surgery (Friday) of that (3rd) week. What are your thoughts? LASIK isn't a "major" surgery, but I'm just wondering if I should do these 2 surgeries "back to back" or wait for LASIK another time? Just thinking it's a perfect time for me to deal w/ wearing my glasses for 2 weeks while I'm recovering from hyster. Hmmm....?

Re: LASIK right after Hysterectomy?

It would depend on how intensive the lasik is and how your recovery is going. Haven't had the hyster yet but I had lasik about 10 years ago. Mine was intense. They told me normal time under the laser is 6 to 10 seconds. Both of my eyes were over a minute. It took me a week to physically recover. Most of that week was spent sleeping. I was very healthy before that surgery and it still took a toll.

Realize, mine was very extensive. When I went for my 24 hr post op checkup most of the others there felt great. Physically, they had no problems, vision wise most were doing quite good too.

So I guess it depends on how much they need to blast with the laser as to whether this is a good idea or not. Maybe you should talk to both of your surgeons and see what they recommend.

Re: LASIK right after Hysterectomy?

IMHO I would not compound surgeries. Your body will have enough to deal with healing from your hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is MAJOR SURGERY. You are having an internal organ removed. This will be difficult enough, without adding eye surgery on top of this.

Good luck.

Re: LASIK right after Hysterectomy?

Hi J-a-n-e,

I had LASIK surgery in 2001 and my laparoscopic hyst (LSH) in 2004. I might suggest you talk with both your gyneo and eye Drs...and see what they both think of your idea. If they think you would be physically up to it.

Also...one consideration might be any prescription pain meds your gyneo Dr. prescribes for post-op. And what your eye Dr. does. I took 800 Motrin after my hyst and in my case, I took a xanax pill prescribed by my eye Dr. right before my LASIK surgery...to relax me. So...maybe a question to ask your Drs...if they will prescribe anything. You wouldn't want a conflict with medications. Just a thought.

Best wishes

Mary
