Worried & Waiting

Well Monday is the big day for my TAH, I'm more anxious then worried. I haven't really been "told" anything about what to expect.

I have no family or friends near by so hubby and I will have to manage.

If you wish you know anything ahead of time...what would it have been?

Should I buy gas X, special pillows, stool softeners?

Worried & Waiting

This site is fantastic for the wealth of info and support!!! I am having a LAVH on Wednesday.

I'm taking:
housecoat (Hosp. gowns don't quite cover it)
Slippers (so I don't have to bend over to put on shoes)
2 pillows (one to sit on for the ride home, one to hug when I have to cough, etc.)
Gameboy (not a big TV watcher, beside don't want to fight with possible roomie for it)
something to keep lips moist and Yes gas-x, Phazyme or anything to keep gas at bay!

Hope this helps!!
Good Luck and Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!!

Worried & Waiting

First of all, I wish I had known that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. That would have calmed my nerves!!
I brought my own pillow from home, I slept the first 24 hours but I think that was from the anesthetic.
I did bring my own p.j.'s and housecoat, slippers.
I also brought lip balm because of the dryness of the hospital air.

Other than that, I didn't really need anything, I was home again in 48 hours because I asked to go home, I felt that good.

Worried & Waiting

"First of all, I wish I had known that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be" - thanks autumnlady - that's really, really, REALLY good for me. Now I'm starting to think that I'll be posting here a couple days after surgery saying "I feel silly for being such a basket case pre-op".

spritedhorse: can you call the nurse at your dr's or in the surgery dept. at the hospital? My dr. gave me lots of info, and then the nurse from surgery called and told me step-by-step where I'll be and what will be going on. If that's not an option for you, reading here has been such a help to me and having the forums to just vent is fantastic. I'm sure my dh and friends are tired of hearing about it so I've been trying not to say too much lately. Instead I come here and get it out and it really helps.

Best wishes - we'll be seeing it in the rear view mirror soon!

One thing that I bought was Brush-up (tooth brush you put on your finger). You can't get out of bed for 24 hours and it was nice to be able to brush my teeth after meals.

I was very fortunate to be able to wear my jeans home that I wore to the hospital. I wasn't swollen. I did buy stool softners and gas-x for home.

I didn't need any special pillow.

Good luck. Trust your doctor and everything will be fine.

I'll tell you this. I'm so glad I had the surgery. I can wear white anytime I want. I didn't realize how much I was putting up with as normal until I didn't have the discomfort any more.
