12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
My initial recover went well. I am a somewhat active person and was definitely up and about, but was careful not to do anything strenuous. At 4 weeks my gyn said I was healing great and released me to all normal activities. I went back to work at 5 weeks and though it was tough, it got slowly better as the weeks passed.
The only problem that I have now is I have slowly tried to introduce exercise and each time I either get pains in my abdomen or vagina, even too much brisk walking in painful. I had a checkup with my GP a few weeks ago and he said just to take it easy until I feel better, but I wonder if anyone else had these issues this far along? Should I go back to the gyn or just give it more time?

Re: 12 weeks and still not feeling total
Hi!
I am 51 and have LAVH with cyctocele and rectocele. So I have a little bit more going on. BUT my Dr said at 3 mths I would be "good as new". And I was excited. I have been wanting to RUN again. Have not done so in years.
At 3 mths I felt AMAZING! Then school got out, I have a 7 and a 9yrs (both boys). I started becoming busier. Then all of a sudden I started feeling pressure in my vagina. And I kinda panicked. Thinking NOOOOOOO Not another prolapse.
Thanks to this website, some women said that I am probably just still healing. Each person does heal differently. So I started to slow down, and then started to feel better again. (I have NOT called the doctor yet....I am not a reactionary person). Anyway, then I started moving around more again......and the feeling came back.
So I truly believe it is my body's way of saying SLOW DOWN.
I am kinda bummed, that I am having these feelings......but I am trusting in the process.
GOOD LUCK!

That is the same thing that happens to me when I slow down I feel better. None of the pain is so intense that it is a life changer, but it is always like "Uh oh, what did I do?!?" I just thought I wouldn't be this fragile so far out.

12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
I truly believe most doctors do not explain to us about the long term healing in advance. If we haven't read about it or know someone who has experienced a hysterectomy, we only know what we are told by our doctors and we expect that.
In my case, I was explaining to my mother in law, 87 year old who had a hysterectomy at 45, my doctor said 2-6 weeks to recover. She looked puzzled at first but then she smiled and proceeded to tell me it would be 6 months to a year before I would be healed and even then it might be longer for some things.
I walked off thinking I was being polite by not telling her technology had advanced in the last 40 years. I decided she will see, I will be helping with the gardens in 6 weeks or earlier. Wrong! I am at 5 weeks post op and while I may be able to help soon, I won't be doing what I was doing the past few years and even then I can see I will have to ease into it.

Re: 12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
This is major surgery and INITIAL healing takes at least 6 to 8 weeks. I dont expect to be 100% until a full year from now. While I am feeling better every day and can do almost everything I used to, I still feel pain and pulling sensations in my abdomen and vagina any time I walk too fast or even attempt to jog briefly. I plan to cut back on any strenuous exercise this year, probably mostly do walking and swimming until my core muscles heal completely. Anyone who says you are 100% healed after only 2 months is a liar, IMHO...there are a ton of muscles and tissues inside the pelvic region that are still tender and vulnerable, no matter how great you feel. I am not taking any chances, only time heals this...

12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
Hi NYCLongIsland!
I wish the doctors would tell it like you have!
It seems they just give us everything step by step.
I would have liked to known what I know now, prior to surgery.
While I waited to get a second opinion I kept doing what I was doing. My first doctor was so vague and I wasn't comfortable with him. I had recently relocated and finding new doctors is terribly stressful.
My second opinion gave me more information and while I was much more comfortable with her, I think it was her confidence in herself, I still didn't get the "big picture".
I found HysterSisters the day I found out I was having surgery. I had 4 days to prepare!
I have learned more from the sisters here than I have any doctor in my lifetime!
Had I not found this site I may have already been back into surgery! I felt great within weeks and doing well now, though because of this site I knew to take it easy and it is going to be a longer recovery than just the INITIAL recovery.
I like you plan on a year before I will consider myself "healed".
My husband and family support me on this idea as well. If my doctor tells me at my 6 week post op appointment my restrictions are lifted, I will have my own restrictions in place. If she says my husband and I can be intimate we both agreed we will double that at least. Plenty of time for that later. We both want to make sure I get through this right with no setbacks.
Your post inspired me, I had to reply!
Take Care,
Sharon

Re: 12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
Ha no problem! Glad my post was inspiring. This site has opened my eyes a lot as to what issues could possibly go wrong if one tries to take the time needed for a FULL recovery for granted. I am doing everything I can that's within my control not to delay or prolong my recovery even though I had to go back to work at barely 5.5-6 weeks after my surgery (I wish I didn't have to but my FMLA ran out and I couldn't jeopardize losing my job- my boss was super nice and let me work from home for a few days when I felt I could be overdoing it)).
My doctor (who also is female) cleared me for all activities at 6 weeks but I didn't feel ready for everything at once. I only started driving 2 weeks ago and on weekends I don't even go out of my house unless it's errands or lunch/dinner. Work wise I try not to spend more than 4 hours sitting as I am nervous of not voiding my bladder every 2 hours at least.
I think my view is a little more conservative than others and that's ok because I am overly cautious by nature. My mom had her hysterectomy (ovaries included) at age 57 and she told me she didn't feel normal until at least 6 months. She is now 66 and runs 8 miles every morning on her treadmill, more than she ever did before and is healthier than ever as she follows a strict diet /exercise regimen to avoid menopausal issues (osteoporosis runs in my family so now I have to be diligent with exercise and maintaining weight).
I am already feeling surgical menopause symptoms and have to suck it up because I can't do HRT. (I couldn't move my shoulder yesterday and my knees feel like lead weight). Things like sex and doing Zumba are sort of my last priority right now. For the next 6 months I have no plans but to heal and work on my diet, keep up my walking exercises and hope my healing continues uneventfully ! Lol

Re: 12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
Hey mine was 2 days after yours Beachbabesoon! I was pretty active prior to the surgery, so it's been a bit frustrating trying to get back to it - It's easy to forget since we are feeling better, however; as with the other ladies, the pulling sensations, dull aches, feelings in the vaginal canal (like prolapsey) are the body's way of saying slow down when you've done too much. I can go to the gym and workout but I did work with a trainer to find things I could do that didn't pull on my core, and I can walk forever. So, I think I'm going to be happy with those things, and leave the core-builders for at least a year post-op. I did try a pilates corkscrew a couple months ago, and realized that wasn't a good idea for 3 days afterwards. But nothing residual happened from that that I'm aware of.

12 weeks post hysterectomy and still not feeling total
Thank to all of you for this post...for sense and sensibility! I'm five weeks out and I KNOW I'm nowhere in the neighborhood of healed, but I'm feeling guilty every day for not being healed at 4 weeks...it was not just a robotic hysterectomy...it was a magical robotic hysterectomy sprinkled with fairy dust right???? I thank heaven for hystersisters!

Yes, your post is Awesome with a capital A!
"Anyone who says you are 100% healed after only 2 months is a liar, IMHO...there are a ton of muscles and tissues inside the pelvic region that are still tender and vulnerable, no matter how great you feel.
I second this.............
There is no way that anyone's body can fully recover from a hysterectomy is 6 - 8 weeks in my opinion. The gyn oncologist who performed my surgery told me right off the bat that it could take up to one full year for my insides to completely heal and that completely made sense to me.
Like you, I am now dealing with surgical menopause symptoms. Joint/muscle discomfort in my shoulders, back, upper arms, knees, wrists and feet.
Good luck with your recovery and thank you for such a wonderful post!
