Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 28, 2015
Ladies.
It sounds like many are nervous about having surgery and that's completely normal and probably more common than someone not being nervous. I guess I was one of those more uncommon ones. I really wouldn't say I was nervous about having surgery. I just wanted it to be over with and I had just had a D & C in August, so I already had some idea of how things would work. I think there were a couple of reasons I didn't get nervous. One was that several people were praying for me, so I knew I was in good hands and the other was that I was just way too busy to have time to get nervous. I knew I would be off work for at least 6 weeks and I was doing everything I could to get things done and get folks at work as prepared as I could for that. Then there was the house to clean and Christmas trees to put up, yes Christmas trees (my mom's suggestion and if I hadn't put them up pre-op they wouldn't have been put up post-op), and so on. And I was still trying to decorate a Christmas tree after starting my bowel prep - put a few ornaments on then go and drink 8 ounces, put a few ornaments on then go and drink 8 ounces....I think I made it through 4 or 5 cycles and finally gave up on the decorating.
So if you find your nerves getting the better of you, try not to focus on all the "what ifs". Instead try to find something to distract yourself....maybe some fun activity you enjoy doing, or some special treat for yourself, or reading to your little ones or playing games with your kids (including your fuzzy, four-legged ones) or just spending time with your family, or finishing any last minute preparations, or ...._______________(fill in the blank -- I noticed teachers on the thread ).
Ladies, you can do this!
for your surgery and a quick, uneventful recovery.

Are binders useful for non-abdominal surgeries? I'm having a LAVH and I'm wondering if it's worth spending the money on or not. I will have a belly pillow.
Also, somewhat unrelated...I'm a side-sleeper. Would a binder help with that, or do I need to learn to sleep on my back?

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 28, 2015
Sorry I missed this afternoon - I have almost been in a "nesting state" here getting ready for this Thursday My surgery is scheduled for July 2nd for TLH with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy - the TRIFECTA. (including cervix) I hit it big when my genetic testing came back positive for MSH6 - LYNCH SYNDROME.
I just turned 52 - and my sister was tested in 2008 because of her history and my father and their cancers. After he passed in August 2014 she made me promise to also be tested just in case, even though I am the "healthy sister". So I agreed and in April saw a genetic counselor and physician in Arkansas. The results came back in one week - they said it would take 3-4 weeks. Never good when they call and want to see you "this week". It took a a month to get into the specialist I am seeing and another month to get on her schedule. I am beyond nervous and having no family in Arkansas I do not feel I have any ears to bend on this matter. I know it is something I need to do because my chances of ovarian cancer are so much greater now. Besides I am finished with kids and at least this will get the menopause out of the way immediately. My body has been trying me on that for two years but keeps resetting itself before I hit the "12 month" mark. It has not helped that over the last seven months I have dropped 14 pounds and have no answers on that. After much discussion I feel that my stress level is out the roof because of issues (which included my father's passing) and I am in need of this downtime after surgery to get straightened out. I know this is out of my control but God has a back up plan if something is found.

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 28, 2015
I remember feeling that way. In fact, the day of surgery, my pre-op meds had worn off, and I was rolled into the OR stone cold sober (there was a paperwork delay of all things!). I was trying to be brave, but my legs were actually shaking so much the nurse asked if I was cold, and I said, "No, just scared." She put another blanket on, anyway, laid her hand on mine and assured me I'd be fine, and I was. And, you all will be too!

I asked my surgeon's nurse and she said due to me being small - an abdominal binder was not necessary
