Ovaries to keep or not??
Hello,
I am 28 years old and am scheduled to have a hyst on Nov. 14. I had a laproscopy in October of 2001, where my DR. found endometriosis and cysts on my ovaries. He left the decision to remove my ovaries up to me. He is concerned that I might have problems with them in the future and doesn't want me to have to go back for additional surgeries. On the other hand because I am so young he doesn't want me to have to go thru menopause at this stage in my life. Any info, support or opinions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much,

Ovaries to keep or not??
Here's a
I am a little older than you. I am 35. Also have endo, but no cysts I am aware of. I am leaving the ovary decision up to my doctor based on how things look.
So, if he takes my ovaries ... if things are that bad... (and I feel like they are) then I will be without ovaries and don't want hormone replacement for 6 months. [Give the endo time to die for good].
If he does not take my ovaries and I continue to have problems he says he will remove them laparoscopically (at some point in the future). So, it's not like doing the full surgery twice.
My says at my "young and tender age" (I don't fell so young anymore) that he hates to take my ovaries, but will if it is necessary. I trust him - so that helps.
So, how do you feel? What does your instinct tell you is best for you?

Well, I'm confused....
Ladies, help me out here . . . I thought (am I mistaken?) that if you have endometriosis, leaving the ovaries functioning will "feed" that disease? Or do they go in and remove all the endo they can find? My best friend had endo EVERYWHERE including one that popped out on her forearm skin, and they were pretty sure she had it in the brain as well. They took her ovaries because both were diseased.
I am known to have ovarian cysts, but my doctor said that is not considered reason enough to take them out. I decided I wanted to keep them if they didn't look abnormal, and left it up to the doctor's judgement.
The problems associated with hormone replacement therapy were enough to sway me in the direction of keeping the ovaries if they were normal. But this is strictly an individual decision, if the doctor doesn't think it's absolutely necessary.

Ovaries to keep or not??
There seem to be two schools of thought on removing the ovaries when you have endo. And there are differing views on hormones replacement when endo is present- some docs wait 6 months others don't. I have read that women who continue to have endo later go back and have the ovaries removed if there's still a problem. Perhaps at 28 the doc is hoping for the best and not insisting they be removed. If it turns out to be necessary, it's like Michelle says- it's not full surgery, and they can be removed with the laparoscope.
I have never felt the "take everything while you're there in the event something MIGHT happen in the future" is a very persuasive argument.

Ovaries to keep or not??
I am 32 and had my surgery on Sept. 30th. I have a long history of endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroid, surgeries and possible adenomyosis. Because of my age I told my doctor to leave at least one ovary. The plan was to remove my right as it has always been affected the most. Luckily I told my doctor that if for some reason my left ovary looked worse then remove it and leave the right. This is what happened. My left ovary had numerous cysts and was stuck to my uterus. I now have my right ovary, tube and cervix. My doctor removed all the endo he could find. It's a personal choice on what to keep and remove from your own body. I found it helpful to call the Cancer Society to find out the risk of long term HRT use. Best of luck with your decision!

Right idea
I think you've got the right idea there gabally! I'm 31 and kept my ovaries but I didn't have endo or cysts on them. I'm 3 weeks post op and am feeling fantastic (but taking it easy just in case) I did have night sweating for the first 2 weeks but other than that I think my ovaries are regaining function that they'd lost in the months leading up to surgery (i.e. my hair and skin have regained moisture and I'm looking alot better).
I wouldn't have healthy ovaries removed but would trust my doctor to be able to judge whether or not they were healthy and viable during surgery.
regards
Xaviera
