Green light on exercise

Went for my 6 week post op exam (2 days shy) and doc said I can ease into exercise. I have been plotting and planning for the past 6 weeks how I am going to get on a regular work out schedule (aerobic & weights) and now I am a little scared to start. Has anyone started working out again and what did you do?

Hi Linda,

The only thing I can say is that we are all different. I have been amazed at how much some are able to do so soon! We are all unique in our healing...that's for sure!

My experience wasn't too bad...I am 50, so that may make a difference! I started back at Curves at 7 1/2 wks, walking mostly at first. Started out going 3 x a wk, then 4, then worked up to 5 x a wk. Added machines gradually, but none that targeted the abs. Whoa! About the end of my 3rd mo post op, started having some discomfort and pressure in the vaginal region. Went to dr, got "sent to the recliner" for 2 wks of rest for overdoing it I didn't go back for 2 wks and didn't work my 2nd job for 3 wkends. I am back at Curves for the 2nd wk again, and I am only going 3 x a wk (I am on restriction right now )

So, all I can say is just be careful...don't overdo too soon. You may do much better than me...I must be a slow healer on the inside. Take things very slowly at first and ease your way back into it. I am still not doing anything that targets the abs, even though I *really* need to very badly!

Best of luck and take care of yourself! Just remember, your body will still be healing for 6 mo. to a year. Be good to yourself!

Green light on exercise

I'm in the same boat as you. I had my surgery June 9th also and my 6 wk checkup is Friday. I have been very much looking forward to starting an exercise program as well as going back to having sex again and now I'm nervous about both. I'm going to start out very light and gradually increase my activities every week even though as far as energy goes, I feel like I could climb mountains since my surgery!! Good luck!

Green light on exercise

Hi Linda,
I am 7 weeks out after a TVH. I have been jogging for week now. I had been walking up to that point. Started very slowly. And the jogging is slow. I'm 45 but have run off and on most of my adult life. I am up to about 2 1/2 miles now and I feel good. I have taken a couple yoga classes and they seem harder for me. As does riding a bike. I am newer to the yoga so I hope it comes with time. I am still so stiff.
But have more energy than I have in years.

Green light on exercise

A lot depends on the activity level you were at before your surgery. For me, I was doing strenuous exercise (Jazzercise) 5 days/week before my LAVH so I was in really good shape. My doctor allowed me to go back to GENTLE exercise at 3 weeks (I begged hard!), but I only went twice a week for the first 2 weeks and was VERY gentle--no impact, 3 lb weights instead of my usual 8, very careful stretching. I slowly increased class frequency and intensity, and at about 8-10 weeks post-op I was close to pre-op shape, although still careful at times for the next month or so.
So much just depends on individual differences....the type of surgery you had, your age, your recovery rate, your doctor, your level of fitness, etc. Listen to your body and it will tell you what to do--or what NOT to do!
