Diet before op....

Now I am scheduled for next week (FREAKING OUT JUST A BIT) and I was wondering whether I should modify my diet a little bit before surgery -as in the two or three days before.
I am NOT sure whether I will be made to purge the contents of my bowel (YUK ) or not, but if I am, I would like it to be as pleasant as possible....

Any tips from you gals??

duh - just did a search and have come up with some ideas!

Re: Diet before op....

I was told by a friend, who is an RN, not to eat much meat a few days before surgery because it stays in the colon longer. Anything else should be fine.

Re: Diet before op....

I was told by my dr to just eat normally before my surgery. I was told nothing after midnight the day before surgery.
My only bowel prep was an enema administered at the hospital the day of surgery ( it wasn't so bad ).

The important thing is to follow your dr's orders

Re: Diet before op....

I don't have to have a bowel prep. My sister in law said to eat light the day before. She ate a big cheeseburger for lunch the day before and she said it was not a smart thing to do. I have my surgery on Friday and on Thursday I plan on eating very light.

Re: Diet before op....

Eat as healthy as you can, because you want to boost your immune system. Plenty of veggies, less dairy and meat, and WATCH THE SUGAR. I was on clear liquids the day before my surgery, then told to take 4 Dulcolax at 3 p.m. and a 14 day supply of Miralax mixed with 64 oz of Gatorade(I dubbed this mixture HATETORADE) at 5 p.m. I was told to drink 8 oz of this crap every 15 minutes. By 6:30 I was afraid to cough or speak. My kids were ever so helpful, chanting Chug, Chug Chug with every cup. I didn't think I would make it to the surgery, I was sooo wiped out from the colon blow. It is now 4 days post-op and I am laughing my head off thinking about it, but I was so scared that I would never stop going to the bathroom.

One more thing. My brother who is a GYN told me to make sure I take my mulitvitamin and maybe some extra C to promote quicker healing.

I have to take 3 dulcolax tabs at 7:00 a.m. then at 10 a.m., 3 and 9 p.m. 1 pkg of something (sa??lax) mixed with 8 oz of cold water. I have been told to drink lots of non-red gatorade so that my potassium levels don't go down plus drink lots of gingerale, applejuice, cranberry juice, jello and black coffee or tea. Nothing to drink after midnight. I was also told not to leave home that day (stay close to the toilet)

Lately DH and I are eating salads and staying away from the non essentials (well his essentials (beer).
