Spinal Anaesthesia Experiences
I am waiting for my date to come through to have a TAH/BSO. I have several large fibroids and have decided to have ovaries removed due to having ovarian cancer in the family.
While I'm very worried to undergo surgery (have never had surgery before), I will be relieved to get rid of my bulky uterus and associated aches and pains. My main worry is about having general anaesthesia - my friend reacted very badly whilst having it due to being allergic to one of the drugs and this has left me terrified. Also, it may sound silly, but I have problems with my jaw (TMJ) and I'm really worried about having it dislocated when they put the tube down inside my mouth. It dislocated once at the dentist whilst having a tooth out (OUCH!)
My GYN said it may be possible to have a spinal/sedation for the op, which has reassured me slightly, and I wondered if any ladies out there who have undergone this type of anaesthesia could outline their experiences of it. Thanks.

Spinal Anaesthesia Experiences
I am not sure about the anesthetic but I was on a constant morephine pump when I woke up and it made me puke. They just changed it to only give me morephine if I pushed the button for it and everything was much better. I would ask next time for no constant morephine. I think the unknown is much worse than the reality of it. At least for me. I want to get back to myself but the pain was not as bad as I had imagined. I will pray for you.

Spinal Anaesthesia Experiences
Carolynz,
I had a spinal when I had my c-section. It worked out well for me. Please know that if you choose a spinal that when you go in you may be totally awake. They must have given me some kind of anxiety drug as well because I wasn't freaking out. For most surgeries with spinals they will hang a drape as a barrier in front of your face so you can't see what they are doing. Your arms may also be strapped down with your arms stretched out from your sides. In my experience the surgery didn't hurt, but I could feel pushing and pulling. I'm not sure if it feels the same with a TAH. People had said when you get a spinal try to lay prone for a while when you wake up. It will prevent headaches. So when the nurses came in I took my medication while lying flat. I didn't get a headache at all. It was a positive experience for me, but it was for a totally different reason. I've had general anesthesia as well. Before they wheel you in they give you an IV with some kind of medicine in it. For my last procedure (ablation) I was asleep before I was even wheeled to the operating room. When I woke up It was over and I had no problems other than grogginess. Wishing you peace and strenghth with your decision. Take care!

Spinal Anaesthesia Experiences
Hi Carolynz;
I had a wonderful experience with spinal...I am very afraid of needles, and was concerned. the only thing I remember is being wheeled to the OR and thats it!! they must of given me something before.....never felt anything, nor I remember anything....never woke up during surgery, (if I did, I dont remember)...
when I woke up in recovery....I didnt have any pain whatsoever!! my legs were numb,(its a strange, funny feeling), but in a couple of hours I had my feelings back in my legs, I did get a bothersome itch around my nose, they said it was a side effect from the spinal, the nurses gave me benadryl, and it went away....when I was taken to my room, I was feeling great....no pain for the following 24 hours!! my doctor did keep me in bed until the next morning to avoid spinal headaches...which I had none....the next morning they took the catherer out, and I started walking the halls, and left the hospital by midday
to me it was a wonderful experience....talk to your doctor and see what is best for you...be honest with him....
pray for Gods guidance in your decision making....

I had a spinal and twilight. It was very nice to have that. You are more aware in recovery and not so groggy as with general.

Spinal Anaesthesia Experiences
I'm scheduled on Monday and am planning on having a spinal (I don't know if there is any difference between a spinal or an epidural). I saw the doc. yesterday and asked if I would be totally awake- just numb from waist down. He said they would give me enough med. so I could sleep - but not knock me out... so I wouldn't be aware of what was really happening. He also stressed he wanted me up by the evening walking- and to handle gas pains the best treatment/prevention is to walk. Of course now my concern is the "spinal headache"- so I'll ask the anesthesiologist about that when he/she calls (I wasn't able to meet w/anest- he/she is going to call me this weekend. I'll write my questions down so I'm ready)
I'll let you know how it goes! And good luck to all of us!
(I HATE the idea of a catheder (sp?). The doc said they'd put it in after I was numb from the spinal- but it needs to stay in 'till the am.

Vicky, the catherer is not a big deal hon.....when they put it on, you are in OR and not know about it....afterwards you hardly know its there...the only thing is when they take it out, its an awkard feeling, the nurse told me to take a deep breath when she was pulling it out and thats all...it does not hurt, its just a weird sensation like a plug being pulled out of you

Spinal Anaesthesia Experiences
My fears with a general were causing me such bad anxiety. I was so glad to hear I could have a spinal block.
I had my surgery last week and it was a great experience. I would suggest to anybody having a hysterectomy to do it that way. I know so many people tha have had general and their recovery was way behind mine. Even my Dr who saw me a week later couldn't believe how well I was doing. I really think it's because I didn't have a general to recover from.
Good Luck to you with whatever you choose.

It's great to read your replies - thank you for your kind words. I just feel so much better reading about your experiences with this type of anaesthesia and I will definitely choose a spinal if this is an option.
Vicki - yes, I would love to hear how you get on with your surgery and will keep you in my thoughts on Monday. Best wishes.
