Re: Which way to go with a 15cm fibroid

hi there,
I had a fibroid growing on the outside of my uterus. I ended up having a TAH, and keeping ovaries.

Re: Which way to go with a 15cm fibroid

Thank you one and all for your helpful replies.i think it is pedunculated as she did mention a procedure where they could tie off the blood supply to it which would make it die but she pointed out that it's extremely painful. I think I really need to do a lot more research before I reach my decision. I am certainly going to look more into ufe. I'm only allowed to stay on the Esmya for 6 months so will have to choose an alternative course of action. I'm hoping the appointment in July will throw much more light on the matter. I am going armed with a list of questions to aid me! Many thanks again x

Another option to consider is the Acessa procedure. Just like the UFE there is no guarantee it will work 100%. This is something I am considering for my 13cm fibroid. There isn't much information out there about it which is an issue but supposedly it can be used on any size and type of fibroid. I have an appointment with a surgeon in July to discuss this option. It still has a two week recovery time but as you said the UFE has a recovery time as well because of pain management. The Acessa is out patient so I would assume the level of pain is less and you don't have to worry about the plastic particles of the UFE sending you into early menopause which is rare but potential side effect of the UFE.

I would recommend reading up on all the options and going loaded to your next appointment with questions. But be warned I have mentioned Acessa to my gynecologist and she was clueless about many of the newer alternatives. I also mentioned it to an RN that works in a fibroid clinic and she was also clueless about it. So you will probably have to go straight to a surgeon who can do it to learn more.

Good luck in making your decision.

Selective cluelessness if you ask me as it is their responsibility to know.

I feel exactly the same way SisterDuke. I don't understand why professionals in this field don't keep up to date on the latest breakthrus. Continuing education is part of their job. I honestly don't expect them to be experts in everything but you would think that they have at least been to a conference or read a medical journal where it was mentioned.
