Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
Hi! I am scheduled for surgery on the 18th and have been told to not take Motrin or Ibuprofen for the past two weeks and until after surgery. At the time of these instructions, pain was frequent but tolerable. It has gotten to the point where I am in pain daily and it is to the point where I would normally take something to ease the pain...I do have a high tolerance to pain, thankfully! I have been relying on a heating pad at night but this is not possible through the day. Has anything helped for others, or is there an alternate pain management product I could try?
Thanks!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
Good morning Steen,
First of all, I am with you. The red tide must sense that things are about to happen for me also and this cycle is worse than ever. I have been taking B12 along with Vitamin C though have you tried some hot tea and honey? Anything to help soothe and ease the mind and body. I hope that helps.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
I was never told not to take anything pre-op. I am still a month out from having my surgery though. My uterus must have caught word I was having it pulled out. I started last night (two weeks early) and it is in full revolt. One last hurrah I guess. I feel you and hope you get some relief soon.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
It's usual for patients to be told that they can't take any medication that has a blood-thinning effect at least before surgery, sometimes longer. This includes both aspirin and NSAIDS such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve).
However, you *should* be able to take acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) as it's not a n NSAID and doesn't thin your blood. *Check with your doctor before proceeding.*
It's a good idea to review *all* prescription meds, OTCs, vitamins and supplements with your doctor before surgery. For example, I was told to stop glucosamine two weeks before surgery and ibuprofen, one week.

Call your dr. office to ask, but my pre-op vitamin and med sheet said if pain management was necessary, regular Tylenol was ok to take.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
I think they tell you closer to your surgery date, like a week or so out.
The nurse called me yesterday and told me to only take Tylenol for pain if needed and to stop taking my multi vitamin, anything herbal, green tea, energy drinks, etc. until after surgery, which is next Friday, May 20th...

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
Thank you all for your responses! I was wondering if Tylenol would be ok, since it's not a blood thinner...unfortunately Tylenol hasn't ever worked for me in the past so I'm not sure it's worth even trying now. I was considering purchasing the sticky heating pads, ThermaCare I think is one, and trying that so for anyone dealing pain I'll let you know if it works!

Get the extra strength tylenol and a heating pad or ice. Hot Epsom salt baths and massage I took Advil 800mg up until about five days before then I started on the Tylenol after my pre op,when she gave me a sheet of what not to take. I have not had a drop of bleeding since surgery. I hope you find some relief.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/18: Pre Op Pain Management
My doctor told me to take percocet the day before surgery, but my blood pressure was really high and he was concerned it was pain related. So he told me to take the day off of work, take the meds, and relax at home. And it was nice and my blood pressure did drop, probably because I wasn't at work and the pain reduction.
