What questions should I ask at pre-op appointment about HRT?

The more I read on having a hyst the more confused I am getting. I have the option the keep one ovary and before had decided to have the doc take it but now, Im confused regarding the hormone replacemnt. The left ovary is fine, no cyst or mass. I have my preop Nov 8. What questions should I ask her about hormone supplements? My uterus is very large and have fused with the right ovary, in which there is a cyst the size of a grapefruit, so having a vag hyst is out of the question. Please help!!!

Hi Debbie!

If you decide to keep an ovary, you shouldn't need HRT. The ovary. if healthy, will continue to produce the hormones you need.

If you decide to have both ovaries removed, you may want to explore HRT options with your doctor. Your doctor will decide, based on your own unique health history and current situation, what would be the best for you to try. There are many HRT products available: pills, patches and creams, for example. Many times, the first type and dosage is not exactly right, and changes are needed. But, if you have a bilateral oophorectomy and HRT is safe for you to take, your doctor will work with you on that.

I'm sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery!

Many s to you,

I'd qualify that statement by stating that you MAY or MAY NOT need BHRT before or after surgery.

One of the reasons I finally gave in to the surgery was because I felt I was in need of BHRT (estrogen) but because of fibroids I couldn't add that. I started estrogen on Friday and hope that it will relieve many, if not all, of my symptoms of low estrogen. By the way a year before the surgery my estrogen was 11 pg/mL after surgery it was 7 pg/mL both measurements are quite low. So it is an example that with or without surgery one's ovaries can be dysfunctional (I kept mine all that changed was removed the fundus of the uterus).
